35 years ago, my dad chose an Intel 80386 over a typewriter – and sparked a lifelong obsession. With 1 MB RAM, a 40 MB hard drive, and a color CRT monitor, I was completely hooked. Within weeks, I had figured out COM1 vs. LPT1 and was obsessively tweaking autoexec.bat and config.sys for expanded memory. While friends played on C64s and Ataris, this was my true beginning in tech. #RetroComputing #DOS #Intel386 #VintageTech #Memories

I'd like to introduce @v4siliy@fosstodon.org, who's just joined Fosstodon! I know Vasiliy personally, and he's one of those genuinely intelligent people who always have something interesting up their sleeve. And here's a little spoiler: he might have some fascinating projects involving retro devices to share soon! 👀 If you're into retro tech, give him a follow. I have a feeling it'll be worth it! 😉 #RetroComputing #RetroTech #Introduction

Socketwench makes videos about electronics, 3D printing, retro computing and related topics. You can follow at: ➡️ @socketwench@makertube.net (Don't worry if the account looks blank to you, that just means no one from your server follows it yet. Follow and the videos will start gradually showing up on your server too.) Hi infosec.exchange 👋 #introduction I'm Seven. In the early 2000s I was writing AIM "progs" in VB6: punters, clone loaders, bots. Learned security by poking at AOL's protocols before most of the rules existed. These days: C#, PHP, web security and AI tooling. I'll be posting about web security, old-school exploits vs. modern defenses, and internet history. It's time for a retrocomputing and small web revival. And I mean hardware, software, the Internet. All of it. I love my fiber Internet connection but would gladly give it up to go back to when computing was actually fun and we didn't have to worry about what we're worrying about in today's world. Yes, I'm old, but I've never been more serious. #retroComputing #smallWeb

Am I the first person ever to run a Bourne shell on a Commodore 64 I wonder. A 1MHz 6502 sucks at disk I/O, sucks at copying memory and sucks at running C code, especially when the C code has to be optimized for space not speed. But it works. I have plans for REU support which I think will make it much much faster assuming i can get away with a few tricks and the timing doesn't break anything. #fuzix #commodore #c64 #retrocomputing #8bit

Whew! I just finished porting 2,852 lines of PDP-11 assembly to C by hand over the past week! This is for form/fed, a form letter editor and generator with template substitutions, introduced in 1971. It's the largest UNIX utility that was never ported to C, and has since been forgotten. 1/6 #unix #retrocomputing #vintagecomputing #reverseengineering

Most notably, the oldest list of UNIX licensees was produced from a form letter database. Ken Thompson used form/fed to simplify mailing to early users: rather than hand- or typewriting messages, this fancy tool would substitute each recipient and the date. In 1975, when UNIX News was starting up, he used this form letter database to dump the list of contacts that served as the initial subscriber list. The circumstances of the UNIX V4 tape found at the University of Utah are still somewhat unclear, as it was apparently not used for research and only sparse traces of its acquisition survived. But some letters to Martin Newell are in that form letter database and I hope to recover more information through forensic analysis. 2/6 #unix #retrocomputing #vintagecomputing
