Hello Fediverse! #introduction FindDepth is a deep research engine. Ask one question and it reads every source in full (long PDFs, archives, documents in many languages), checks claims against the text, and writes a long cited report with tables, figures and the open questions the evidence can't settle. Reading for pleasure is linked with structural brain changes and a laundry list of positive effects, including improved mental health and reduced risk of cognitive decline. A survey of evidence for the benefits of cracking a book also notes that starting young is linked to better attention, memory, executive function, academic achievement and fewer mental health problems. The key, says neuropsychologist Barbara Sahakian, is pleasure. “Read for enjoyment, as you will read more often and longer.” https://www.newscientist.com/article/2589065-reading-for-pleasure-boosts-memory-attention-and-mental-health/ #Books #Reading #Health #Libraries #Bookstadon #Librarians #Read #Psychology #Science #Nature

Not sure this is useful for anyone, but Shift Happens is now in collections of Harvard University and Providence Public Library, in addition to 15 previous ones: https://shifthappens.site/#libraries The book was not traditionally published, so most of these acquisitions are because of individual patrons/backers – thank you!

"There is no significant data that patrons want or desire social workers in our space, especially those who are socially excluded. For patrons already entangled with social services, patrons impacted by incarceration and family policing, undocumented patrons, patrons with experiences of involuntary care — social workers in our spaces can instead pose a significant barrier to access." #libraries

At my library's repair cafe as a volunteer. It's the first time they're running it and they're hoping to do this regularly. I came in thinking I would help with computer troubleshooting... but they have enough people doing that. So I figured I could help with Linux OS install... but the local Linux Install Party is here and has enough people. Then a guy brought in a bicycle! And no one is here doing bike repair. But I brought my allen wrench set and a multitool. So I just got done running and installing a new bicycle brake line on an older bike. Brake works just fine now! I'll bring my full set of bike tools next time! #solarPunk #repairCafe #bicycle #libraries
