hear me out... pocket size ssh terminal ⁃ six-inch display ⁃ one week of battery life ⁃ cellular ⁃ wifi ⁃ usb-c display port for keyboard and external display ⁃ operating system has ssh only ⁃ local storage just to keep ssh keys ⁃ minimum ram and cpu just enough for zero-delay ssh ⁃ price below 500 eur is it achievable? #cyberdeck #solarpunk

Our Water Well Project is moving forward again after a recent pause and we are almost there! Thank you so much for being patient & supportive, becuase we are now working towards bringing the water closer to our farm and community, regardless of all the challenges. We’re happy to be back with an update on our water well project after a period of silence. The quietness was because of the challenges i.e we had to find an advanced drilling company with the correct gears and expertise to proceed on that greater depth(>100ft), we also had to raise the new funding(1200 eur)... On the other hand, the drilling its self with a new advanced company has also been very very slow because of the rainy season that has been interrupting. The attached photos show the water that collects every after 5 hours which is a clear sign for the experts to say we are near the water table Bottom line; This journey is not easy at all, but not impossible. #uptdate #sustainability #waterwellproject #solarpunk

Yay! This #SolarPunkSunday I just learned that my novella, The Blossoming of the Big Tree, is the #SFFBookClub pick for November, so I'm excitedly waiting to see what discussions come up. It's the story of an old woman who coordinates the defense of her decentralized nation, which thrives in a post capitalist world. Read a sample and get it here, or in major stores. https://www.ododopress.com/novellas/the-blossoming-of-the-big-tree/ Here is the original announcement. https://weirder.earth/@picklish/117480960032544259 #book #bookstodon #book #solarpunk #sff

I got a midnight message from a volunteer within our local community food group telling me they're taking down some of our servers until this PHP vuln is patched. If you're in IT or technically proficient, supporting a local mutual aid or charity group is an amazing way of helping out. (A lot of people ask me how a person who is unable to meet in person or be physically in proximity with others can help out in community groups - this is an amazing way to do that.) Edit to add: A lot of local community groups have a tiny amount of IT assets that are still critical to them. For our group, it's a single wiki server (along with some third party communication apps like email, chat, and our website). It's generally easy for them to maintain that small number as a volunteer. Anything larger for a big non-profit should be a paid position in our current economic model. #solarPunk

Israel is not just committing genocide of people but also cultural and ecological genocide. 90% of Palestinian olive trees have been destroyed in the last few years, farms and livelihoods destroyed. A network of Palestinians and allies seeks to preserve Palestinian heirloom seeds and cultural heritage. See below to support this group, order seeds, raise awareness and offer to be a seed saver. https://www.palestineheirloomseedlibrary.com/ #solarpunksunday #solarpunk #gardening #garden #jardin #garten #Palestine

Recent discussions about self-hosting and coop services got me thinking... How absurd is it that we're all expected to surrender our computing needs to for-profit hyperscalers and cloud service providers? How dare these oligarchs try to make us feel weak and incapable of providing for ourselves? They want us to forget that three decades ago we collectively created one of the world's fastest supercomputers with distributed.net using nothing more than scavenged compute power from our idle PCs. They want us to forget that most of us have drawers full of old-but-otherwise-servicable smartphones with performance specs meeting or exceeding that of low-tier cloud service provider VMs, which might be brought back to useful life using open source tech like @postmarketOS@social.treehouse.systems. They want us to ignore open source tech like BOINC, web assembly, and @thekhronosgroup@fosstodon.org 's Vulkan and OpenCL that might allow us to safely run local and distributed compute. They want us to assume we have no choice but to accept higher electricity bills and greater reliance on fossil fuels to drive oligarch-run computing, and to ignore how the explosion of rooftop solar and the rapid commercialization of sodium ion battery tech could shift our society's power dynamics, both literally and figuratively. We are mighty. #solarpunk

My father-in-law is a distributor for these solar roofing panels and gifted us some of them for Christmas and we're finally getting the ball rolling on getting them installed. Our roof is in major need of repair so two birds one stone... And we SHOULD be able to produce a surplus due to our South facing roof in the Colorado sun and we're going to put in some backup batteries. I'm so excited to see how this all turns out! https://www.apluspvt.com/ #solarpunk #homesteading

9.3 Solarpunk Presents: Appropedia & Appropriate Technology with Felipe Schenone Have you ever heard of appropriate technology? It's all about the type of technology that is accessible to most people regardless of their expertise, from its creation to its use and repair, inclusive and appropriate for various environments. The website Appropedia is a wiki-style repository of knowledge with more than 4,000 projects detailed on the site, each relating to sustainability, accessibility, and inclusion. The articles emphasize DIY utility and teach visitors how to understand each project, rather than presenting technologies that the end user, not being a specialist, isn't sure how they work, how to replicate them, or how to repair them, and instead are simply told to buy in order to 'keep up' with technological progress. Appropedia is all about technology built with justice. How cool is that? We also have a segment testing a few solarpunk tech ideas for appropriateness just to get a better sense of how the definition can be applied! https://shows.acast.com/solarpunk-presents/episodes/93-solarpunk-presents-appropedia-appropriate-technology-with#solarpunk #SolarpunkPresentsPodcast #podcast #episode #Appropedia #AppropriateTechnology #Technology #DIY #doityourself
