We have a client coming in a few weeks out who is partially deaf. Does anyone out there have a good windows speech to text app that can be used to help communicate with her? Preferably one where the text can also be enlarged to be easier to read. #accessibility

Hi Fediverse!
I'm Eduard, an accessibility consultant and C++ developer.
I've just opened the beta of Tagafolio, a tool that checks PDFs for accessibility (PDF/UA and WCAG) and helps fix them.
It runs entirely in your browser, using WebAssembly. Your documents are never uploaded anywhere.
Try it: https://tagafolio.com
It's a beta, so feedback is gold, especially from screen reader users.

Apparently I'm an "Alt Text Hero".
I just call it not being ableistic.

@PaulaToThePeople@climatejustice.social here's your Fediverse Wrapped 🎁
365 days, all from your public posts. Times in UTC.
Which tile surprised you?
Sharing very much encouraged! If you share the images yourself, use #FediverseWrapped so others can find them.
Different timezone? Add tz=America/New_York next time.

This week I learned, from a blind acquaintance here, that when we write in ALL CAPS in alt text, their screenreader* reads it all out, one letter at a time.
Totally defeating the point of alt text making things accessible, right? Needless to say, I've stopped.
Well, LOL remains LOL, of course! #TIL #accessibility #blind #deafblind
- apparently, not all screenreaders.

@TarHeelBel@caneandable.social I wonder what if anything it'll mean for #Accessibility which has been inconsistent in both #iOSApps
People who use assistive technologies, such as a screenreader or speech-recognition software, need to know the names of interactive elements on the web. Otherwise they may not be able to recognise the thing they’re dealing with, and so be unable to interact with it.
Which means we, as authors, need to give things meaningful accessible names. How does this happen?

https://Columnly.social now supports client-side alt text generation, along with text recognition (OCR).
Your media never leaves your browser during classification, instead we download and cache a model about 300MB in size, and handle it in browser for privacy.
Ideally you would write alt text yourself, but if you can't, or don't want to, its now just a button tap away, and it helps ❤️

Stop trying to upgrade disabled people's body when the problem is your design!
@WeirdWriter@caneandable.social argues that the tech industry needs to stop trying to sell useless expensive gadgets no disabled person wants, or can afford, and start fixing actual accessibility barriers, like bad code, and poorly designed infrastructures.

Hi, Mastodon! #Introduction
This is the official account of Read-Along, a small web app. It reads your documents aloud and lights up each word as it's spoken.
Who it's for: people with #Dyslexia or #ADHD, students, English learners, and anyone who'd rather listen.
Upload a PDF, Word or text file, or paste a link. One document a day is free. Premium is $14.50 a month or $69 a year; it renews until you cancel.

Hi Fediverse, a proper #introduction since I never wrote one.
I'm Mohsen, an AI platform engineer in Bologna. Before my PhD I spent six years running the IT of a 1,000 MW power plant.
My main open-source project is YazSes: hold a key, speak, and your words are typed into any app. Speech recognition runs on your own CPU. No cloud, no account.
I'll post about #Linux input quirks, #Whisper, #Privacy, testing and #Accessibility.

UPDATE: I left WordPress today. This unstable situation has destroyed me. Damn to them.
I'm leaving WordPress platform very, very soon.
Mullenweg must give clear, transparent answers on what he wants, because we are thousand of people with disability, left behind.

A couple months ago I posted a clip of an app I made just for myself, and a bunch of you said “please release this.” So I did!
Cava Reader is an ebook + audiobook reader for Android. You load an EPUB and its audiobook, and it highlights each word as the narrator says it, karaoke style. The speech recognition runs on your phone, so it all works offline.
I made it because my brain wanders. When the words light up I never lose my place, and if I zone out for a second I just look back and the highlight is right there. (Same reason I always record my blog posts and post them next to the text. Friends with ADHD got me into that habit.)
also I made this video myself, and I’m way too proud of the little piano sync at the end lol
No account, no ads, your books never leave your device. There’s also a built-in library of 37 public domain classics you can read along with for free.
Reading and listening are free, read along on the classics is free, and read along on your own books is free for the first 4 hours. After that it’s a one-time $9.99 for the Full app. No subscription.
This is my first closed-source project and the first thing I’ve ever charged for. It’s the most effort I’ve ever put into anything, and it might be what finally stops me from dipping into my savings to keep Altbot running. If you do buy Full, thank you :)
Google Play, or APK / Obtainium: https://cavareader.app
Android only for now (sorry iOS folks, I don’t own a single Apple device to test on 😅 (for now… coming soon TM??))

Hi, I'm Jakub. I run AriaWorks from Poland. I audit websites and apps against WCAG 2.2, and I run hands-on training for dev, QA and design teams. I also do remediation support.
Here I'll post testing notes and findings from accessibility world: forced colours, focus management, screen reader quirks, and the code that fixes them. Now and then something on the EAA and how Poland implements it.

In 2021, we discarded #Moodle after evaluation, and went on to develop @lunalms@floss.social as an #LMS with #accessibility at its core. But of course it's worthwhile to learn from an established, 25 years old ecosystem, so I went to #MootDACH26 to see what everyone was up to. It was very insightful, and it's a very nice community.
