#deafblind

This week I learned, from a blind acquaintance here, that when we write in ALL CAPS in alt text, their screenreader* reads it all out, one letter at a time.

Totally defeating the point of alt text making things accessible, right? Needless to say, I've stopped.

Well, LOL remains LOL, of course! #TIL #accessibility #blind #deafblind

• apparently, not all screenreaders.

Tunnistaa suurimman osan puheessani. Suomeksi.

Olen saanut Sirillä sovelluksia auki, kertomaan karttareitin, kertomaan kuka on Suomen presidentti ja kertomaan omasta mielestäni hauskoja vitsejä. 👍

• Enemmän tai vähemmän epäselvää puhetta kuulovammaista johtuen

I'm new here, so I guess an #introduction would be a good place to start. Hi, 👋🏻 I'm Delfin. I enjoy #writing, mainly humorous #fantasy, and creating stuff with my ancient but accessible Yamaha Tyros synthesizer. #Deafblind, #neurospicy, #pagan/christopagan, currently stil working out which. Also #nonbinary/demiboy. So basically justn all-round creative/weird. 🙂

This is a niche ask but fedi seems like the place I might find an answer: Does anyone have any idea of old publications (ideally ones on the internet archive), modern online communities that discuss media, or any other sources amongst the deaf community where I might find some discussion or writing or anything about how deaf folks felt about Tony, the deaf teen on season 9 of Dallas? Getting a recurring deaf character at all NOW is still rare, much less in the 80s, so I'd really like to know if there's any reactions preserved from that time or if there's any posts about it now from folks remembering it then. I'm about to scour places like reddit but it's like...I know where to go to find Dallas discussions I can search for discussion about deaf representation, I don't know where I might find general deaf community discussions new or old i could search for Dallas discussion. My single user self hosted server doesn't have a ton of reach so boosts appreciated! I'm adding a few hashtags I found with some use too. #deaf #deafblind #disability #SignLanguage #ASL #AmericanSignLanguage

Yksi vammaisvihan muodoista on Dinner table syndrome. Käsitteen selite lainattu sivustolta, teksti englanniksi: "Conversations at the dinner table typically involve reciprocal and contingent turn-taking. This context typically includes multiple exchanges between family members, providing opportunities for rich conversations and opportunities for incidental learning. Deaf individuals who live in hearing non-signing homes often miss out on these exchanges, as typically hearing individuals use turn-taking rules that differ from those commonly used by deaf individuals. Hearing individuals’ turn-taking rules include use of auditory cues to get a turn and to cue others when a new speaker is beginning a turn. Given these mechanisms, hearing individuals frequently interrupt each other—even if they are signing. When deaf individuals attempt to obtain a turn, they are frequently lost in the ongoing dialogue. This experience, wherein deaf individuals are excluded from the flow of conversations at mealtime, is known as the dinner table syndrome." https://nsuworks.nova.edu/tqr/vol25/iss6/16/ #vammaisviha #kuuro #kuurosokea #deaf #deafblind #tasaarvo #yhdenvertaisuus #DinnerTableSyndrome

It's here!!! I can't decide if I want to look at pictures or read a book! Why this is a big deal is because all of my other braille displays have one line so if you are a person who can see imagine that you only get between 20 and 40 characters before you need to scroll on one line. That is how I read all of the time. This display has a one line display at the bottom, yes, but at the top there is a larger display that is 30 x 10 that lets you read multiple lines at once or… Look at pictures! This is life-changing for me! #DeafBlind
