This is interesting. As a self identified neurodivergent person I know that my sensory differences are a challenge when driving. I hate bright lights & am easily overwhelmed by sensory input. My poor proprioception means that in the car, as with my body, I don’t know where my edges are unless I can see them. Parking is really hard. I used to be ashamed of these difficulties. Now I recognise them as part of how I am, accept them & work within my limits. Never drive at night, avoid freeways, stick to places that are familiar or that I can learn details of in advance. Find easy spots to park. If there’s a passenger, no chat in the car. It’s ok. Most adults who are autistic don’t have a diagnosis. Meaningful research into driving & autism doesn’t exist yet. There’s lots of bad drivers out there, esp among those who’ve been driving for ages. I’d like to see regular retesting of knowledge & skills as a condition of keeping a drivers licence, for everyone. With frequency increasing with age. What do you folx think? #driving #safety #neurodiversity #autism #ActuallyAutistic

I will create a Lemmy community soon. It will be named "automobile", inspired by 4chan but without their culture, and with up-to-date sources and more information. I didn't have my own car before but considering many people need cars to survive, having a community like this would be very helpful. I'm living in North America, especially here I can't escape from car ownership. I will share the link here once it's done. It will be a friendly community so you can even share a post about selling your car etc. #Canada #Canadian #Lemmy #Car #Cars #Auto #Automobile #Automobiles #Driving #NorthAmerica #USA #EU #DIYorDIE #DIY #repair #DIYrepair #UseItAgain #UsedCar #UsedCars #LibreSoftware #fedi #fediverse #4chan

Driving annoyances 2. #driving You are car 6 waiting at a light controlling a single lane of traffic. We all know that the second car has the responsibility to notify the first car that the light has changed if it seems they did not notice. If they fail, the notifications falls to car 3, and so on. What is more annoying?

Lets pause a minute to ask perhaps the most consequential Q. that many of us will confront this summer.... when you're stuck in a traffic jam on the motorway, should you change lanes to the one that seems to be moving the fastest? Here's a holistic analysis (and conclusion) suggesting changing lanes doesn't work.... Its an interesting argument but doesn't completely accord with my own experience as a frequent user of the M6. #driving #motorways #holidays

First time very-long-range #driving an #EV:

  • charged to 100% for free (solar/PV) over the last 3 days, before departing
  • charging stations are surprisingly simple yet awesome tech
  • the UI/UX sucks as much as that of petrol stations 🙄
  • ABRP for planning upfront: 1 minute to do it, zero range anxiety
  • costs for quick charging are slightly lower than petrol
  • hotels usually offer free charging with the parking ticket
  • EV is so much smoother

So far, everything feels like an upgrade.

One aspect of driving an EV that doesn't get enough attention is regenerative braking. The Kia app has started showing how much power is fed back to the battery for each of my trips and it's typically around 40%. I'm surprised how high it is. ICE vehicles in contrast waste all of their forward momentum when braking. I've heard of people with 10-year-old EVs in Hawaii who have had to replace rotors and other parts of the brake assembly while the pads look almost new. #EV #driving

I noticed around twenty years ago that insects in Europe were in serious decline. It didn’t even need a ‘scientific study’ and I use the same methodology today. In the 1980s, in summer, when I drove in Europe, the windscreen of my car was covered in dead insects after only 100km of driving. By the early 2000s this was no longer true. Many fewer bug-splats on the glass. Now? Hardly any at all. You cannot blame Climate Change for this. This is down to excessive pesticides and farming techniques. Now studies show bird populations in serious decline. Ever wonder what they used to eat? We learnt nothing from the DDT fiasco, apparently. #insects #flies #driving #Climate #ClimateChange #pesticides #farming #environment #Birds #bioaccumulation #systemcollapse

February is cub season for badgers. Mums with babies only ever go a 500metre distance from their cubs. If you see a badger newly dead by the roadside please check for lactation (bare area around swollen teats on her underside). * Her cubs have 24 hours before they leave the set in search of mum, and they will die of hypothermia. *https://www.badgertrust.org.uk/report if you find one as described. Link added thanks to a quote reply. 🙏 Please please share, or post your own toot. Xx #badgers #roadkill #nature #cars #driving #environment
