#News: #Research finds #dragonflies have a visual superpower to see deep infrared light that humans are blind to 🐉👁️ By copying this protein, doctors could soon use deep-penetrating light to treat cells inside the human body. #nature #insects 💡🔬

Dragonflies can see a color humans can’t and it could change medicine

Dragonflies may see the world in a way that pushes beyond human limits—and surprisingly, they do it using the same molecular trick we evolved ourselves. Scientists discovered that these insects can detect extremely deep red light, even edging into near-infrared, thanks to a specialized visual protein strikingly similar to the one in human eyes. This ability likely helps them spot mates mid-flight by picking up subtle differences in reflected light.

Hey, Fedi. Help me help a friend. (Not financial!) I have a friend who is all about cool bug facts. They're going through an intense patch in their life, so I would like to send them some bug facts to cheer them up. But this is really their thing, so basic search engine results aren't going to new to them. If there's a cool bug fact that you genuinely love, could you tell me? I'll save them to share with my friend over time. 1/3 #Bugs #CoolBugFacts #Insects

Honey bees are bullying other bees, scientists discover

Honeybees are aggressively pushing wild pollinators away from flowers, with scientists documenting how they chase off rivals and dominate valuable food sources. New research warns that rising temperatures and increasing honeybee populations could intensify this competition, threatening wild bees and other important pollinators.

“In a normal park, we estimated there were about 30 species of wild bees,” says Jens Ulrich, a former University of British Columbia (UBC) PhD student who worked with the city between 2021 and 2024 to study the meadows’ ability to attract wild #bees and hoverflies. “In a park with a meadow, we saw that number jump up to something around 60 species per park – per year.” #rewilding #vancouver #bc #pollinators #meadows #parks #urbanrewilding #insects #canada
