#News: #Research finds #dragonflies have a visual superpower to see deep infrared light that humans are blind to 🐉👁️ By copying this protein, doctors could soon use deep-penetrating light to treat cells inside the human body. #nature #insects 💡🔬

Dragonflies can see a color humans can’t and it could change medicine

Dragonflies may see the world in a way that pushes beyond human limits—and surprisingly, they do it using the same molecular trick we evolved ourselves. Scientists discovered that these insects can detect extremely deep red light, even edging into near-infrared, thanks to a specialized visual protein strikingly similar to the one in human eyes. This ability likely helps them spot mates mid-flight by picking up subtle differences in reflected light.

"Male dragonflies are known to engage in mid-air “dogfights” to defend their breeding territory, using different maneuvers than those they employ when hunting prey. A new paper published in the Journal of the Royal Society Interface concluded that relatively simple rules drive that behavior, namely that male dragonflies are trying to maintain a tactical position. This mirrors the tactics of human fighter pilots." https://arstechnica.com/science/2026/07/dragonflies-maneuver-like-fighter-pilots/ #Dragonflies #Behaviour #Biology

Male dragonflies' dramatic aerial combat maneuvers emerge from relatively simple vision-based rules.

It's always exciting to see a new species in my garden, and today it was this small dragonfly. I'm pretty sure this is a female Darter, but I can't decide whether she's a Common, Red-veined or Yellow-winged Darter. Regardless, she's welcome here and also very photogenic. If you can identify the species, please let me know :-) #Dragonfly #Dragonflies #Insects #CloseUp #Nature #NaturePhotography #Garden #Flower

RE: https://dice.camp/@Da_Gut/116842635266307459 This podcast episode is crackling good. That unisexual salamander complex is absolutely crazy. It uses the sperm of five different species of salamander to trigger its egg production. It’s a polyploidy complex - well, the majority are a tetraploidy. The unisex lineage has been around for over 2 million years. The bit on dragonfly migration is equally fascinating #Nature #Salamanders #Dragonflies #Podcast
