I wanna talk about the political movement of the Open Source community. If you spend enough time on fedi, you surely will have heard *plenty* of criticisms of what's going on in Open Source, and rightfully so. So I'm curious, what do we think the Open Source community *should be doing* in order to achieve important progressive and anti-authoritarian goals? What should the next generation of programmers be thinking of and working on in this space? A special rule: You're only allowed to say "don't X" if you have at least as many "do Y" recommendations. Preferably, I'd like to see more do's than don't's. Boosts welcome :cyber_boost_request:#tech #openSource #FOSS #progressive #programming #askFedi

Has anybody here solved the following conundrum?

  • wanting a bluetooth/gps tracker to be able to recover a stolen bicycle (or other use case)
  • not trusting Google, Apple and other companies to not use/sell/lose data
  • using a deGoogled phone and Linux computer (in my case, LineageOS and Fedora)

That is, I would want to be able to recover my bicycle if stolen, while keeping my daily movements as private as possible. Enshittified web search has not helped much..

So here’s the thing. My entire life is on Proton: email, calendar, documents, VPN, all my passwords, all my ID, all my important data. My annual subscription is up at the end of January. If they don’t oust Andy Yen by then, I’m out. The question is where? Infomaniak seems to offer most of what Proton does but they also use AI. What other options are there? I’m seeing people suggesting email alternatives. But I need a whole lot more than that. #AskFedi #cybersecurity

Random tech question, especially for audiophiles, or anybody who listens a lot to music. What affordable (<=£50 GBP)¹ options exist in the UK for: Taking sound input from a sound card via a 3.5 mm audio cable or optical cable output;Transmitting the sound to paired bluetooth headphones; ... ... and which has a volume control option (ideally analogue, or otherwise at least 100 volume steps)? We have bluetooth headphones (Sony WH-1000XM4), but only presently use the bluetooth connection (using LDAC) when listening to music on our phone. When we're at our PC, we've been using a 3.5 mm output from our speakers. We got those speakers back when we used to listen to music occasionally out loud, but we don't ever do that any more: we only listen via headphones, so the speakers are entirely redundant. We'd like to be able to connect our headphones quickly to the PC with an analogue volume control, like the one we have on our current speakers. In case it's relevant, we have a Sound Blaster Z sound card. Boosts and quotes appreciated, if you think it'll help :BoostsOKPrideSymbol: Please remember we're in the UK and looking to get something on a budget. #AskFedi #tech #GenuinelyAsking #NoReplyGuysPlease #audio #audiophile Edit 2026-03-30: We returned to having a look after a pause. There are Bluetooth transmitters that can take multiple inputs (analogue or digital) from a sound card or other source to Bluetooth headphones or other devices, and which have volume control on the transmitter. However, the price-entry point for getting LDAC support exceeds our price range, and the price range for even getting a volume knob increases it even further. Even there, we'd be looking at something like a 1Mii DS700 (~£100 GBP), but that still uses digital volume steps 🤦‍♀️ In fact, even more expensive products like the Fiio BTA30 Pro still use digital volume steps, just with better underlying hardware  In short, no Bluetooth device meets our needs, so we expect we'll replace our redundant speakers with a 3.5 mm analogue volume controller and stick with wired for now... and possibly add some kind of 3.5 mm to LDAC transmitter adapter at some point later. ¹ This is the ideal price range, but if there's some longer-term better solution, perhaps involving a replacement PCI-E sound card that has a native option for this, or some device that might also help with future streaming stuff, if we can ever return to it, we're willing to consider the options presented. Anything beyond £100 GBP will be pushing it though, unless it's a perfect, long-term solution with multiple features.

What detection format would you like to have if you got detections online? (e.g. for a recent attack/vuln wave like php2shell) #dfir #infosec #cybersecurity #askfedi #incidentresponse #osint #threatintel #threatintelligence #opensourceintelligence

Hey, self-hosting people, need your help! Could you recommend static site generators suitable for non-technical people? i.e. Ones that work without needing any command lines, that work entirely graphically. (There's an odd paradox that static sites are technically much simpler but their editors are often harder to use.) #StaticSite #StaticSiteGenerators #AskFedi

Ok, I think this one is a stretch, but I have to ask. Are you an #autistic / #AuDHD bald man in the northern hemisphere, who wears a hat indoors as the weather moves towards winter? I know everyone is different, but pls, recommend a comfy, not too warm hat that my sensory sensitivities can cope with. I live in Scotland, so has to be something I can easily get here or online from a UK/ EU based retailer. I don’t get on with stiff labels and seams and absolutely do not enjoy or use real wool at all. lol 😂 @autistics@fedigroups.social #Autism #Bald #ADHD #Hat #AskFedi thx! 🎩 *Edit Thank you all for the responses! Got a lot to think about. Thank you! 🤩

Eldest (a mature 12) has developed a sudden interest in horror films and is asking me for recommendations and/or permission to watch them. So far I have allowed, but not suggested, Scream and Halloween. I have suggested Tremors and Poltergeist. What would you suggest as roughly age-appropriate horror films that are actually decent and they might actually enjoy? They have watched all of Stranger Things. #AskFedi #horror

Hey y'all. Does the follower count matter to you ? And do you use it as a measurement of how trustworthy someone is here on Mastodon? I'm just curious. I know I can look it up but I like having additional source of info. Boosts aren't mandatory but appreciated. Besides I'll make my own conclusions eventually... #askfedi #mastodon #askfedi #fediverse #poll #polls

If you were to vanish suddenly tomorrow, what extremely informal but endearing description would people use to describe their memory of you? Feel free to specify who is doing the remembering. (No self-deprecation here.) #askfedi
