Lots of lovely shots. "For three weeks in February 2026 I was in the highlands of Angola — the plateau that feeds the Okavango, Zambezi, Congo and Cuanza rivers — on a biodiversity survey called the Cassai Life Atlas. […] Most of this plateau has never been surveyed, and not for lack of interest — it’s been sitting behind decades of landmines left over from Angola’s civil war." https://www.nickybay.com/cassai-life-atlas-angola-2026/ #Africa #Angola #Spiders #Insects #Snakes #Surveys #Biodiversity

*SPOILER: the dog makes it* Welp, after 22 years livin’ peaceably in rattlesnake country, it finally happened: my dog got bit. I had just unknowingly stepped within a foot of the thing without incident, but my little Pom wasn’t as lucky. Took a hit to the thigh. It was a baby Western diamondback coiled up next to the porch, so small and twig-like it didn’t even register as a snake until I heard its tiny but unmistakable rattle. Fast forward three quarters of an hour. My country vet met me at the clinic on Sunday night and had her gassed, on an IV drip, injected with antivenin, and zapped with a cold laser in minutes. I’m generally cool with snakes, but after a close encounter with a venomous pit viper my outlook always sours a bit. It’s been 24 hours and the Pom and I are still kinda traumatized. She’s expected to recover, but that toxin is no joke. If ya wanna see what I mean, pictures follow in the next post. #dogs #snakes

TW- reptiles Went reptile-hunting near Bath, found 4 species - Common Lizard, Adder, Grass Snake and Slow Worm. Sadly, the first three are now becoming scarce in the local area, in part due to habitat destruction, but also from non-native predators, including cats and especially Pheasants, which are released in large numbers around the outskirts of Bath. Pheasants will eat reptiles - even Adders! #Nature #Wildlife #Reptiles #Lizards #Snakes #WildlifePhotography #NaturePhotography
