OK, I just saw someone posting about a project called Terra Tempora (https://terra-tempora.com/?ref=mastodon) which claims to let you "scroll through history", searching for battles, treaties, and "tracking civilisations". Unfortunately the whole thing is a classic object lesson in why we shouldn't entrust our understanding of history to data scraping and AI processing, which is pretty clearly a core basis for the project. Here's some examples. #History #DigitalHumanities #DataViz #Histodons

RE: https://mastodon.social/@mbongowo/116918572217118815 "students learn buttons, not data models" - this perfectly encapsulates what I see again and again in #DigitalHumanities #HigherEd. Most courses (in my experience) are trying to get to the specific thing, be it a method or object, they want to focus on. Very understandably so. But with a this leads to skipping/rushing through the foundational concepts. It's a catch-22: Starting with the foundations is not engaging and can lead to 'learning without understanding why' 1/2, idea in next toot

Ten years of teaching GIS and remote sensing, and the hardest concept is still the same one: students learn buttons, not data models. Once someone truly gets what a raster is — a grid of measurements with a CRS stapled on — half of remote sensing follows on its own. Fellow geo educators: how do you teach the leap from software clicks to spatial thinking? #GIS #GISchat #RemoteSensing #Teaching #HigherEd

#Introduction A Quarex is a question with its context still attached. Every Quarex topic sits six levels deep — library type, library, shelf, book, chapter, and the topic question itself — and the answer engine is handed all six. The question is never flattened into a search string. Every answer is sourced, with three follow-ups and links out to other libraries and the web. Quarex is a new way to make certain kinds of books. #Libraries #Taxonomy #DigitalHumanities

Boosts welcome! #OpenScience #FDM #Fediverse #Bonfire #NFDI #DigitalHumanities
