It's #BandcampFriday ‼️ 🎉 This week I learned from the 'Norah Jones is Playing Along' podcast that the 4 Non Blondes lead singer songwriter Linda Perry has published a solo album this year. I will post that podcast episode here below by the way. https://lindaperry.bandcamp.com/album/let-it-die-here #alternative #90s #punk #grunge #LindaPerry #4NonBlondes #NorahJones

Yesterday we discovered an old collection of kids #Disney #Ariel magazines from the mid #90s complete with cassette tapes of play along audio. Luckily I had a Panasonic RQ-CR55 stereo cassette player on the shelf and the kids immediately got playing! I've now found myself on numerous occasions untangling and unjamming the tapes, something that I haven't done in decades nor thought that I'd have to ever do again. The kids are absolutely loving playing with it though 🥰

Wisdom of the Crowd request: For some reason it's quite hard to find the source of quotations from Third Rock From The Sun online (besides those on wikiquote). Does anyone know what season/episode this is from? (Fuzzy memory coming up): When discussing love, attraction, etc. someone suggests to Dick that mere proximity might be an important factor. Dick says something like "That's ridiculous! If that were true, men would constantly be having affairs with their secretaries!" I've put a stupid amount of time into this search to use it as a 10-second clip in a social psych lecture... #fml BTW, I can find many sites with transcripts (or sometimes AI-scrambled semi-transcripts) of episodes, but even searching those sites (half a dozen so far) seems to produce no results. I might have the wording wrong. #90s #ThirdRock #tv #help

@gusseting@mastodon.social yes I have. But I didn’t make it through it. It was just too much for me. I saw the Trees twice in the #90s and Mark’s solo records had a great impact on my life. On December 14, 2016. I flew to Los Angeles to see The Afghan Whigs at the Teragram Ballroom to see them play Black Love in its entirety. It was a benefit gig for their guitarist Dave Rosser, who unfortunately didn’t make it. He died of cancer shortly thereafter. Also there that night was Moby (playing an acoustic set), and Mark Lanegan. As you can see below, he was right in front of me. I could read the tattoos on his hands. The room was dead quiet and he had all of us entranced. And a little more than five years later… MARK was gone. I will never forget that night. The impact he had on my life was immeasurable. I just wish he could have taken better care of himself. He was an otherworldly talent.

SCREAMING TREES Even If And Especially When 2024 U.S. reissue Their second album overall, but their FIRST for SST Records. If all you know is the latter day Screaming Trees albums from the #90s (Sweet Oblivion, Dust), then hearing the SST material comes as quite a shock. This is a far more raw and PSYCHEDELIC brand of Trees. It’s rough, garage-y, a bit unrefined, and legendary frontman Mark Lanegan’s signature deep and weathered vocal is not there yet. It was THESE kinds of records that made them well-known heroes in the underground. The band went through their paces for years honing their craft, and when “Seattle/Grunge Mania” happened six years later, they already had FIVE records under their belt. This album’s opener “Transfiguration” is one of my all time favorite Trees tunes. It’s so gnarly and in your face. Siked to finally have this. #vinyl #vinylrecords #vinylcommunity #records #vintage #retro #physicalmedia #analog #vinylcollection #art #music #1980s #80s #80sMusic

RYAN ADAMS 1989 2015 U.S. 2xLP pressing I find it hilarious that the only Taylor Swift album I like is not by Taylor Swift. 😂 Say what you want about Ryan Adams (most people do). Yes, he’s a bit of an asshole and a creep, but the dude is a hell of a songwriter. He’s also always done interesting cover versions of a vast array of songs, from many genres. So, back in 2015, when I heard he was doing an ALBUM cover of Taylor Swift’s 1989, it was gonna be good. I knew it would be: A. way more nuanced and interesting. B. that it would actually rock It’s really good, man. It took an obnoxious over-produced schlocky pop album and added a bunch of #70s and #90s rock to it. It proved that not all pop music needs to sound like it came off a conveyor belt. It can have personality, it can be interesting, and it can have a little umph and depth. I still loathe Taylor Swift. #vinyl #vinylrecords #vinylcommunity #records #vintage #retro #physicalmedia #analog #vinylcollection #art #music

SCREAMING TREES Invisible Lantern 1988 U.S. CD 💿 issue Awesome little find today! As much as I love the #90s Trees output (and I do LOVE IT), the major label money and production value made them a bit of a different band in comparison to the earlier SST albums like this one. Their earlier records lean more into hazy & heavy #psychedelic #garage rock than the #grunge -a-riffic albums from the halcyon 90s alternative days. I don’t see a lot of these early SST Trees albums lying around on CD, nevermind vinyl. It’s a bit of a shock to hear Lanegan’s vocals on these albums if all you’re familiar with is the deep, gravelly voice from their heyday. Here, his voice is much higher-pitched, and perhaps not yet affected by a lifelong journey into drugs. A pretty great album, with one of my all time favorite Trees tunes in “Smokerings”. #vinyl #vinylrecords #vinylcommunity #records #vintage #retro #physicalmedia #analog #1990s #vinylcollection #vinylfinds #rare #art #cds #80s #1980s

In the early 1990s, the most profitable game in the world wasn’t called Mario or Sonic, it was Street Fighter II. And yet, this game was born from a chain of accidents: a series of unbelievable coincidences, burned-out developers, bugs that somehow made it into the final build, a component shortage that reshuffled everything, and a creator who stumbled into the video game industry purely by chance while trying to become a journalist.
