Curious, as I've been testing the upcoming Mastodon design in our dev environment for the past 2 days. The new design isn't widely available yet, but mastodon.social likes to test with real users and installs alpha versions early. So, a quick poll for Mastodon.social users and anyone on other instances with the new v5 design enabled (feel free to share this to reach more people): #Mastodon #Mastodon5 #MastodonAlpha #MastodonNightly #NewMastodon #MastodonSocial #Design #UI #UX

Pages such as can not be reached through the hamburger. When the hamburger menu is forced: the Community submenu can not load the Community page. Other submenu headings may be similarly bugged. Without the hamburger, with Community as a menu (not a submenu): a click on the menu item for Community does work. @thismarkp@mastodon.social sorry for not noticing this sooner. Cc @pauamma@mstdn.social only because I vaguely remember you commenting about top level menu behaviours long ago (maybe three or four years ago in Bugzilla). #FreeBSD #hamburger #menus #UX

Or, you know, like if your star #ux person threatens to quit or the PM has a stick up their butt unless you "hide the controls that are inactive", then make it apparent that "we've hidden something here, click / hover to find out what" - I can think of half a dozen clever ways to do this.

#Windows experts, can you answer this without trying: How many times do you need to press the down arrow to select C:\Users\Public? #UX #UI

Mild take for the day: All videos players (looking at you YouTube) should have a waveform on the timeline to allow easier skipping to specific parts where the audio track noticeably changes. As seen here in Amberol, which is music player, but the idea is the same. #UX #UI

You know what would make #Mastodon even better? Making the post composition window larger than the post reading frame. I'm old enough that even with reading glasses, my #eyesight needs the composition window larger so that I can locate the cursor accurately when editing. I don't need to edit other people's posts. Make the composition window text at least as large as the featured post text, maybe even larger, not the size of the thread text. #UX #UI #quality #disability #design #accessibility

Self checkout. Person of a poor eyesight tries to desperately find a QR code to scan. At a very visible, prominent, in-your-face place is an ad for Minecraft. And guess like what a Minecraft zombie looks like to non-nerdy person? Yep. Did not scan either. #UX #RealWorldUx

We're reworking how settings are organized in Thunderbird Desktop and would love your thoughts. Take our short survey, 10-15 minutes tops. No trick questions, no wrong answers, and your feedback goes straight to the designers. Take the survey 👇 https://usabi.li/do/38d3jndivg3z/kpjgdi #opensource #thunderbird #ux

"12 years ago today, #Apple published a web page with one job: to make a U2 album go away." –MacRumors Funny, if they'd just given out a "download for free" coupon code, or let you delete it with a click, it probably would've been widely seen as positive. Just goes to show how a lack of control in the situation can feel like an abusive user experience. But I'm sure they learned their lesson… *Watches as Siri/AI options are rammed into every experience* #mandatoryU2day #UX

Most people mistake information density for insight. Cramming every metric into one chart just spikes cognitive load and hides the actual story. The best visualizations prioritize clarity over completeness. Less is usually more when you want people to actually understand the data. #dataviz #ux #datascience

Most designers obsess over minimalism but forget that too much whitespace can actually increase cognitive load. Efficiency isn't about hiding features. It is about grouping information so the brain processes it faster. Stop stripping away utility in the name of a clean look. #UX #CognitiveLoad #Design

Nuxt + tailwind and a lil elbow grease = a beautiful Loops Help Center powered by markdown/mdx ✨ You may notice the Support Tickets button and personalization, while this is a central service, we use a clever method to link back to the source server and generate the avatar, as if the user never left their instance. Shipping soon! #Loops #LoopsDev #HelpCenter #UX

The fediverse becomes more accessible and easy to use when we hide the complexity behind familiar and trusted flows and better user experiences. If we want to save people from walled gardens, we need to provide a more frictionless onboarding experience, and empower them with privacy friendly discovery based on services and tools like Starter Kits and the People Directory! No contact book uploads. No SMS verification. Just one tap auth and powerfully simple user interfaces #UI #UX #Fediverse
