Sites like Facebook, Instagram & YouTube track & profile users to target advertising towards them
This fuels online #harm by pushing more & more #extreme content to users
Yet these sites are a primary way government departments share public information

I’d like to point out that the #Fed is nothing like the #toxic #corporate platforms you rightly condemn. It isn’t for two main reasons (there are others but these are preference-based):
Your fedi #Mastodon feed is curated by you. You see only what you want to see (normally via #hashtags).
There is nothing pushed to your timeline through algorythms (which is what is happening on the other platforms for propaganda purposes as well as other nefarious practices). What you see are real people and not bots (the later are usually reported and blocked very quickly, plus, you can block them yourself with a mere two clicks)
I’d like to add a third, although this one is choice-based depending on your own interests and preferences. You pick the Instance depending on whom you wish to converse with and share the same interests (or otherwise if you prefer).
