I think about my time in #NewMexico often, especially when I’m using the clay samples I collected there to decorate my #pottery. The colorful abundance of clay in the landscape continues to inspire me—the way it dazzles the eye and its latent potential to be transformed into so many useful and beautiful things. #Clay is a resource that can’t be exhausted. I find that incredible. It was forming hundreds of millions of years before humans showed up and has continued ever since.
i just took this little (3"x2") porcelain goat dish out of the kiln!
It would be great for teabags or trinkets.
It's even cuter in person!

Outdoor dinner with my mom and husband on our wedding anniversary weekend. Another celebratory garden bouquet 💐 Mismatched #pottery, as always—two cups and vase by me, one cup by David MacDonald, candle by #EastFork, mom’s manufactured dishaware.

After working with Zulu potter, Jabulile Nala from South Africa, I began to wonder why #ceramics has become an expensive hobby requiring extensive tools and equipment when originally, it was just earth and fire which are free. I created this workshop series for those who are interested in clay but find the cost of classes prohibitive. I offered it at a sliding scale but now it's available for free. Enjoy!

I just sent this pot to a collector in Brooklyn. I'm so grateful. The form of the vessel is inspired by Gwari water pots made by Ladi Kwali (Nigeria's most renowned potter) and other women potters of that region whose names we do not know. The surface design is inspired by my favorite plant the Thai red roselle which I'm harvesting in my garden right now. The decorating slips were made from clays foraged in Puerto Rico, Louisiana, Pennsylvania and Virginia. #pottery
Today is one of those rare and lovely fall days in Malaga with the lightest of rains. I found an art store very near me that stocks clay… and hake brushes! I’m having the coffee I deserve! #pottery#ceramics#malaga
The ruins of Falcon Works, located in Hanley (Stoke-on-Trent, England).
Demolition work started on this Grade II Listed building last year. Soon after, work was halted while investigations were done due to concerns the historic kiln had been damaged.

I was given the recipe for the off-white glaze I use by another potter and it was a game changer for me. Before that, I was using glossy opaque glazes that completely covered my red stoneware clay whose color I loved so much. For years, I would compensate by wiping glaze away from certain sections to let the iron rich clay body show. Finding this glaze made my work more subtle and rustic, recalling antiqued or rusted surfaces worn with age. #ceramics#pottery
I’ve been more withdrawn since the pandemic.
a few months ago I proposed building a wood fired rocket kiln in my community. To get this done, I have been around a LOT of people-building a kiln, teaching newbies to make work for the kiln, I also did a printmaking activity for our historic group.
It may not be much in the big scheme of the world, but getting out there and doing what I can has been really good for my spirit- and I think it’s helped others too.

I’ve been wanting to make a larger planter for one of my philodendrons that is root bound in its current pot and this new pottery wheel has motivated me to get it done.
I can only throw 6lb of clay comfortably but the planter I want to make requires 10-12lb. I just threw the bottom section and can leave it in place to dry before adding the top section. In the meantime, I can throw pots on my other wheel.
Not impossible to do with one wheel, just less convenient. Also: vintage #pottery tools!
What do you call people who buy entire storage units, like after someone has died and their estate is being sold? Well, that’s what one of my neighbors does and he found me this old but functioning #pottery wheel. I can use it to slow-build larger pieces while I work on my other wheel and I can use it for students/mentees. Or if I don’t end up using it, I can pass it on to a beginning potter looking to set up their own studio. Horray #FreeStuff.
I want a solid-dish-soap holder that’s a cross between an ancient oil lamp and a ginger grater. Pottery, toothy interior to grip the soap, pouring spout for using soap-drips as liquid soap, and a handle so I don’t put my hands in the soap. Enough roughness on the underside to attach counter-protecting feet.
Went looking, did not find, maybe a #pottery enthusiast or potter here makes one. Or could!
I finished a load of #pottery yesterday, including these two lamp bases. I love the way they came out: one funky little Earth Tone lamp for a desk or nightstand and the other more subtle but still highly decorative. They’re at the lamp shop getting wired.
Wild garden bouquet for my husband’s birthday get-together tonight. 💐
This is the first pot I ever made that united coil building and wild clay terra sigillata. I learned this method of coil building from a Zulu potter in 2023 and I started painting pots with wild clay in 2024. Uniting the two techniques felt like a huge progression for me.
It came out with a crack so I kept it and I’m glad because it’s sentimental and perfect for an occasion like hubs’ birthday.

I love this part of my process. I spread out all of my test tiles (both glaze and terra sigillata) on my work table and create combinations that I’ll use on my #pottery. The four tiles to the right are one of the color combos I picked out.
I wrote about the process of converting foraged #WildClay samples to terra sigillata (refined decorating slip) in this blogpost:
