Changed my mind. I decided to install Sailfish on the Sony Xperia 10 III. It was plain sailing. 😃 I guess, things only become difficult when things go wrong, and things went very smoothly. In brief, I unlocked the bootloader, and downloaded Android 12 from Sony. I flashed that to the Xperia (11 wasn't available). I performed all the usual 'phone stuff, which worked. I then flashed the 'phone with Sailfish using fastboot. The same things are still working. #Android #Sony #Sailfish #Jolla

@jpkolsen@social.data.coop @asbjornn@expressional.social @maltelau@expressional.social @BogWitch@social.data.coop Got an answer this morning: " I understand that this situation is frustrating, but unfortunately, for security reasons, MobilePay cannot be used on rooted or modified devices. We are unable to make exceptions to this policy or assist further with devices that do not meet our security requirements. If you have further questions, we recommend contacting the device manufacturer or the place of purchase. " I responded. I'll keep fighting. We make devices that are not rooted or modified. They don't have Google Services. #Volla #Jolla devices as well. We need to push for other means than Play Integrity.

Although I'm a happy user of the new Jolla Phone, it is of course at the moment still limited in available apps. So I decided to just start asking some of the providers of my preferred Android apps if they are willing to provide a native version for Sailfish OS. I do not expect any of these to be actually happen, but if you don't ask, it will for sure not happen. The first 6 requests are out, other will follow in the coming weeks. #sailfishos #jolla #jollaphone2026

Current #Jolla status: "WLAN adapter not available" No amount of resetting of the networking subsystem or turning the phone completely off gets around it. I'm guessing this will be where being able to access the Linux system underneath will turn out to be very valuable. (There are also other nearby issues - like being unable to forget the VPN configuration and that there's something strange where the mobile network only gets IPv6 access and around 50% of all sites work) Otoh, this is why I bought it. To help make a non-US mobile phone OS actually usable.

Ok, so the new Jolla Phone arrived today. Will write a nuanced review when I've used it a bit but for now it really seems like the Linux phone I always wanted. Here is the very brief first impressions score. Customer & buying experience 2/10 Unboxing 7/10 Hardware quality 8/10 Software experience 9/10 Android compatibility 9/10 If you are ready to tinker a little and can manage on your own, buy it! #jolla #jollaphone #Jolla2026 #jollaphone2026 #digitalsovereignty

The new Jolla Phone's "Day 1" celebration was held in the capital city of Finland, Helsinki on 8th July 2026. We, two members of Gecos Analytics were present and received our new, shiny #Jolla phones running the open source #SailfishOS. 2/30

We've used Linux-based phones a long time. Nokia N900 was the first, followed by the original #Jolla Phone in 2013 followed by Sony Xperia phones (X and XA2). These phones had the commercial version of #SailfishOS installed on them. 3/30

Second reason was related to #geopolitics. Russian Rostelecom was a major indirect shareholder in #Jolla Ltd. This became a major liability with Russias full scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. 6/30

In fact, #Jolla Ltd. nearly went bankrupt at the time. The founders of Jolla Ltd. had to create a new company, Jollyboys Ltd., and had to buy all of Jolla Ltd.'s stock to get rid of the Russian entanglements. 7/30

So, we wanted more #privacy and #digitalsovereignty. There are not really many options available for #Android and #iOS when it comes to mobile devices. The new #Jolla phone with #SailfishOS seemed to be the best open source non-Android option. 11/30

The selling points of the #Jolla phone and #SailfishOS are #privacy and #digitalsovereignty. #Jolla Phone's CPU comes from Taiwan, memory from South Korea, camera from Japan and the chassis from China. The phones are, however, assembled in Salo, #Finland. 13/30

So, here we are with our first impressions of the new #Jolla Phone (2026). As few if any buy it for its technical specifications, we'll focus on "how well can it replace Android as a daily driver". 14/30

According to uptime I'm now a full week into my Jolla Phone 2 adventure. I absolutely love the phone. Phone calls are crisp and clear, no connectivity issues so far, Bluetooth works with all devices I've tried it with (not many, but VAPPEBY Portable, Sennheiser Momentum M2 AEBT, Shure AONIC 40 and Toyota Touch 2 with Go). Signal works (both natively using Whisperfish available on Storeman or using the Android app through AppSupport). Other than that I've got Bitwarden and Authenticator going, Nextcloud sync, Obsidian, my bank's app, my public transit service's app, my mail service's app and a lot of other stuff. The fingerprint scanner is super fast and unlocks the phone the moment I touch it. It all feels really smooth. I can't seem to organize icons on the app menu, which is something I'd like to do; I'm sure there's a patch or dot file for that, but it should be easily accessible. On the home screen you can see open apps, but the screen preview/thumbnails are often missing so I have to guess what apps they are. I hope that is also fixed in an upcoming release. When it comes to photo quality it is quite good in daylight, but in low light settings it's terrible. I'll get around to posting some samples later. I previously said speaker audio is not good, but it's actually not that bad. I did an informal comparison for myself between the iPhone 14 and the Jolla 2 and I think the iPhone is slightly better—sound feels fuller on the iPhone, while there's a bit of a reverb/accent thing going on with the Jolla. Regarding build quality, I've dropped it twice. Got a beauty dent, but other than that, all good. #Jolla #JollaPhone #SailfishOS #DigitalSovereignty

I've been testing the new #Jolla phone for a couple of days now. At the same time I'm documenting the experience and I will publish it as an honest review on my blog. So far I should say that it is a very smooth experience. Native app availavility is an issue, but because we xan install Android apps, situation is not bad at all. I installed Signal, WhatsApp, #DeltaChat and they all work very smoothly. Well done @jolla@techhub.social #SailfishOS
