Today in Labor History November 4, 1780: The Rebellion of Túpac Amaru II against Spanish rule in the Peru began. The Spanish captured and executed Tupac in 1781, but the rebellion continued for another year. Many women participated in the rebellion, including Tupac’s wife, Micaela Bastidas, who commanded her own battalion, and who many claimed was even more daring than her husband. The uprising began because of “reforms” by the colonial administration that increased taxes and labor demands on both indigenous and creole populations. However, there was also an ongoing desire to overthrow European rule and restore the pre-conquest Incan empire. And though this would merely replace one feudal power with another, there were also Jacobin and proto-communist elements to the rebellion. Most of the Tupamarista soldiers were poor peasants, artisans and women who saw the uprising as an opportunity to create an egalitarian society, without the cast and class divisions of either the Spanish or Incan feudal systems. The uprising began with the execution of Spanish colonial Governor Antonio de Arriaga by his own slave, Antonio Oblitas. Tupac Amaru II then made a proclamation claiming to be fighting against the abuses of Spain and for the peace and well-being of Indians, mestizos, mambos, native-born whites and blacks. They then proceeded to march toward Cuzco, killing Spaniards and looting their properties. Everywhere they went, they overthrew the Spanish authority. Tupac’s wife, Michaela Bastidas commanded a battalion of insurgents. Many claimed she was more daring and a superior strategist than her husband. As a result of Tupac’s leadership and success against the Spanish, he became a mythical figure in the Peruvian struggle for independence and in the indigenous rights movement. The Tupamaros revolutionary movement in Uruguay (1960s-1970s) took their name from him. As did the Túpac Amaru Revolutionary guerrilla group, in Peru, and the Venezuelan Marxist political party Tupamaro. American rapper, Tupac Amaru Shakur, was also named after him. Chilean poet, Pablo Neruda, wrote a poem called “Tupac Amaru (1781).” And Clive Cussler’s book, “Inca Gold,” has a villain who claims to be descended from the revolutionary leader. #workingclass #LaborHistory #Tupac #indigenous #uprising #colonialism #genocide #inca #peru #torture #books #author #fiction @bookstadon@a.gup.pe

The whole foundation of generative AI is built on colonial frameworks i.e systems ran by colonialst institutions/companies, designed to extract labour and erase authentic knowledge. ‘AI’ is simply the latest tool of extraction of wealth and labour from marginalized and working-class people. So it won’t matter how much people ask for ‘ethical’ AI legislation. That system is rotten to the very core, and it frankly needs to be burned to the ground along with every other system of oppression. #tech #AI #colonialism

Today in Labor History September 23, 1945: Vietnamese workers rose up against French and British troops to create the Saigon commune. Fed up with racism and violent harassment by the French colonialists, they shot and killed police, officials, and at least 100 French colonialists living there. They built barricades with overturned cars and trees, chopped down from the outskirts of town. The official resistance, the Vietminh, stayed out of the direct conflict, limiting their support to providing food and supplies to the insurgents, to show the British they supported “law and order,” in hopes of winning recognition as the true leadership of Vietnam. #workingclass #LaborHistory #vietnam #rebellion #uprising #colonialism

"Just last month, the Cuban Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP) reported that survival rates for childhood cancer dropped from 85 percent to 65 percent amid the oil blockade. "Infant mortality has also steadily climbed. In 2017, at the start of Trump's first term, Cuba had an infant mortality rate of four for every 1,000 live births. That figure climbed to 7.7 in 2024, just before Trump's second term, and reached 9.9 in 2025. "The maternal mortality rate similarly rose to 44.1 deaths for every 100,000 live births by the end of 2025, up from 40.6 the previous year." https://www.aljazeera.com/news/longform/2026/7/30/to-play-god-cubas-healthcare-system-collapses-under-us-pressure #Cuba #USpol #healthcare

«Not Your Rescue Project: Migrant sex workers fighting for justice»

👤 Chanelle Gallant 👤 Elene Lam 🗓 2024-11-12 📔 Haymarket Books 🛒 https://www.haymarketbooks.org/books/2258-not-your-rescue-project 🌐 Website: https://www.notyourrescueprojectbook.com

A landmark abolitionist primer on migration, sex work, policing, and the “anti-trafficking industry”—and a powerful argument about who is really leading the way toward justice: migrant sex workers themselves.

In this impassioned corrective to decades of misguided, carceral approaches to migration and sex work, long-time organizers Chanelle Gallant and Elene Lam deftly expose the harms of criminalization in the name of “anti-trafficking” and lift up migrant sex workers’ organizing in the US, Canada, and elsewhere. In doing so, they make the compelling case that the only effective response to the needs of migrant sex workers must be led by migrants in the sex trade, as they fight for rights, safety, and autonomy.

Gallant and Lam illustrate how this movement is taking aim at the root causes of violence and abuse: the white supremacist securitization of borders, the criminalization of both migration and sex work, the patriarchial devaluation of women’s labor, and forced displacement due to climate disaster, war, and poverty—all fueled by racial capitalism.

An indispensable exploration of the relationship between migration and sex work—and the underlying societal conditions they reflect—Not Your Rescue Project is a thorough indictment of the anti-trafficking industry as an engine of criminalization and state violence, and an instructive account of the emancipatory politics already being practiced by migrant sex workers in their organizing. Throughout, Gallant and Lam place migrant sex workers at the center of struggles against border imperialism, carceral states, and capitalism—dispelling a range of poisonous myths and paving the way for deeper alliances across movements with the shared goal of dismantling and abolishing carceralism in all its forms.

Today in Labor History July 19, 1936: The People’s Olympiad was schedule to begin in Barcelona, in opposition to the fascist one that was officially scheduled to begin in Berlin. Even though Barcelona lost its bid to host the official Olympics, it continued to build its main stadium, in response to the growing fascism and racism in Germany, with the goal of hosting an inclusive, non-racist, and anti-fascist Olympics. Many of the athletes who went to Barcelona to compete were antifascist activists, themselves. However, just days before the People’s Olympics were set to begin, Spain had its own fascist coup, led by Francisco Franco, who would go on to run the country as a fascist dictatorship from 1936 until 1974. Many of the athlete who had travelled to Barcelona for the games remained there after the coup, becoming some of the first International Brigades who fought the fascists. At the time, Spain had become a Republic, and was governed by the Popular Front, a coalition of left and leftist parties including the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE), Communist Party of Spain (PCE), the Republican Left, and the Republican Union. It was initially supported by Galician and Catalan nationalists, the POUM, the socialist Workers' General Union (UGT), and the anarchist trade union, the Confederación Nacional del Trabajo (CNT). However, many other anarchists did not support the Popular Front politically, while still fighting with them against the fascists during the Civil War that followed. 6,000 athletes had registered for the People’s Games, including many from the U.S., the U.K., and exiles from Nazi Germany and fascist Italy. There were teams from French-occupied Algeria and other stateless or occupied nations. There were teams of Jewish refugees, and teams made up of Basque and Catalan nationalists. Teams were also fielded by unions, as well as by socialist and communist organizations. #workingclass #LaborHistory #fascism #antifascism #nazis #barcelona #germany #olympics #racism #colonialism #anarchism #socialism #communism

The ‘screen for T’ initiative makes perfect sense as part of a broader strategic policy of policing gender. Goes like this: define gender as binary & the extremes of its cultural expression as natural; assume a hierarchy in which men are superior to women; normalise institutional cultures in which the highest status is accorded to those who most clearly embody attributes coded as male. These framings offer a pathway for men whose life prospects have been destroyed by the accelerating plunder & obscene enrichment of the oligarchs to direct their anger toward any ‘other’ who is not like them (except their wealthy heroes of course) & find status based on their obedient manifestation of exaggerated masculinity. Join the army. Be a man. Any man no matter how exploited can know himself to be better than a woman. Men’s status is supported by the progressive disenfranchisement of women - we are denied autonomy over our own bodies, lose access to means of making a living independently of men, eventually lose the right to vote (see Margaret Atwood for details). This is a long term plan. Boys and men are valued as cannon fodder. Girls & women exist to provide service. Its success rests on keeping us distracted with clickbait media and shiny toys & eroding our collective ability to understand history, see patterns & think critically about them. Is no surprise that the disciplines that teach these skills have been progressively defunded over decades. This is white supremacist christian patriarchy in action. Crises are an opportunity. Colonialism is the business model. Plunder & exploitation are the means, profit & power are the goals. We see you. #colonialism #plunder #hierarchy #gender #misogyny #racism #obedience #history #sociology #AusPol

Next in Abuja, four governments will do something that sounds, on paper, like a belated act of economic self-respect. Nigeria, Ghana, Côte d'Ivoire and Cameroon between them the source of roughly two-thirds of the cocoa that becomes the world's chocolate will sign the Abuja Declaration and stand up a Cocoa Value Addition Alliance, a coordinated attempt to stop shipping out raw beans and start capturing some of the value that currently accrues, almost entirely, to everyone else. Nigeria will additionally sign its own Cocoa Value Addition Accord, a domestic compact roping in governors, farmer groups, financiers and researchers into the project of turning bean into brand rather than bean into someone else's bar.
