Vale Margaret Hamilton. She was a Software Engineer. She was the _first_ Software Engineer because she defined the term, Software Engineering: "When I first came up with the term, no one had heard of it before, at least in our world. It was an ongoing joke for a long time. They liked to kid me about my radical ideas. It was a memorable day when one of the most respected hardware gurus explained to everyone in a meeting that he agreed with me that the process of building software should also be considered an engineering discipline, just like with hardware. Not because of his acceptance of the new 'term' per se, but because we had earned his and the acceptance of the others in the room as being in an engineering field in its own right." Margaret Hamilton led the Software Engineering team at MIT that created the software that ran NASA's Apollo Guidance Computer. The photo of her standing next to a stack of source code printouts — that's her work, and she was essential to NASA's mission of landing people on the Moon for the first time ever and getting them back to Earth again safely. Margaret Hamilton, computing pioneer who led software development for the Apollo program, dies at 90 https://news.mit.edu/2026/margaret-hamilton-computing-pioneer-dies-1007 #MargaretHamilton #SoftwareEngineer #SoftwareEngineering #ComputerScience #NASA #MIT #Apollo #MoonLanding

Just saying… #Augenoptik

@genejm1017.bsky.social · 57 years ago, at about 4:18 in the afternoon, humans landed on the lunar surface for the very first time. If you want to hear what that moment sounded like, listen along with me on "Apollo in Real Time ." https://apolloinrealtime.org/11/ #Apollo #LunarLanding #NASA anniversary

OK all my #electronics / #PCB fab #FediFrens 👋 I need [1] to get a custom #keypad designed & fabbed and I’m starting from a low low base of “sure I’ve put built plenty of electronics kits & learned a bit of electronics theory but mostly a long time ago & I haven’t designed anything myself”… 🙃 so what’s the best way to get started? 🤔 I found a couple of places that do custom #keyboards & have online key[board|pad] design tools, which seems about right. I don’t actually want to become an expert in custom PCB / #keyboard design, PCB fabbing, or managing Shenzhen supply chains – I just want to get this one thing made [2] and am happy [3] to exchange money for goods & services (within reason) to get it done I’ve already looked at just using a gaming keypad to do the thing but I really want to integrate the keypad into the other thing to get it to where I want it to be…     OK, there’s no need to be coy I guess – I want to put a “real” keypad into my 1:1 #3Dprinted #Apollo #DSKY (WIP pic below) what’s my optimal pathway to getting this to exist? I imagine that other DSKY nerds may want one once it exists, so the ability to turn it into a limited run after the initial prototypes are done would be a bonus pls #boost4reach 🙏     (tagging in @projectgus@aus.social, @voltagex@infosec.exchange, & @Unixbigot@aus.social for starters…) #AGC       [1] want [2] yeah, I hear it too 🤪 [3] resigned

With the renewed attention on the Apollo Guidance Computer, I'll share some photos from a presentation I gave a couple of years ago on software documentation, featuring its source code. The engineers who wrote the software that got astronauts onto the moon sure had a sense of whimsy!
