@dansup@mastodon.social I really appreciate all the work you have put in building the Fediverse. There are some instances that support and are accessible over the #Tor network as .onion sites (such as https://defcon.social) Could you scrape instance headers and check for onion-location and if present mark an instance as advertising they support Tor? @torproject@mastodon.social

We just received about 60 (?) fake account registrations - this time not even trying to pretend any identities, just kind of DDoS. What it interesting, that this time, they did not use known #TOR exit nodes and the IPs are not known by existing blacklists. Instead, the attack seemed to came from pool of IP addresses owned by Japanese companies and from Japanese mailservers... We need to figure identity of operators of this botnet. Let's setup some place to share the IP addresses used by botnet. If we want to keep #Fediverse and #Mastodon registration open, we must federate our blocklists too... CC @tante@tldr.nettime.org

Super impressed by the brute force efforts of my fair city, Ashland, Ohio. If we had time and effort to throw at it, it might be fun to hack the data being gathered by #Flock cameras and rebroadcast it all in real time. I would probably need to figure out how to stream over #Tor. https://www.instagram.com/reel/Da1KarqJcbA/?igsh=MWVxZjVuMXI3cmVkcw==I#privacy #surveillance #FlockSafety #ALPRs #ALPR#EFF #SurveillanceState #MassSurveillance

:tor: I thought scaling Tor meant adding more relays. What it actually meant was multiplying failure modes... I now operate 24 Tor relays and bridges across 15 locations, 11 ASNs and 6 operating systems. Every new relay brings another provider, firewall, IPv6 route, service manager, identity key, backup and recovery plan. Some things I learned along the way: 🌍 More countries don’t automatically mean real diversity 🔑 The server is replaceable, the relay identity isn’t 🛠️ Linux, BSD and SunOS need the same outcomes, not the same commands 📊 What I configured isn’t always what the Tor network currently sees A large fleet is easy to count. A resilient one is much harder to keep alive. I wrote about what operating Tor across 15 locations actually taught me: 🔗 https://brokenbotnet.com/2026/07/17/non-eu-relays/ #Tor #Privacy #OpenSource #SelfHosting #Infosec

Briar is in maintenance mode This is a quick update about the status of Briar. Short version: the project is still active but we’re only making essential security updates and bugfixes for now. Long version: For several years we’ve been trying to find solutions to some of the longstanding issues with Briar, such as high battery usage and unreliable background operation on Android, missing features like account backup and file attachments, and a difficult user experience for adding contacts and communicating offline. We considered completely rebuilding the application from the ground up, or even splitting it into separate applications for online and offline use. Meanwhile, the project didn’t have funding, we were reluctant to look for funding without having a long-term plan, and so we could only work on Briar in our spare time. Last year, we decided that we wouldn’t realistically be able to solve these issues and so we reluctantly decided to shut down the project. We worked on releasing a final update for Android and desktop to allow the app to remain functional for as long as possible. In the meantime we were hearing a lot of supportive words from people we had told about our decision, and the app continued to attract new users. So finally we decided to continue the project in maintenance mode. We’re only making essential security updates and bugfixes for now, but eventually we hope to make some incremental progress on those longstanding issues. We’re sending out this update because some rumours have been circulating that the project is shutting down, based on conversations we had with people in the internet freedom and privacy community last year. Those rumours are out of date: the project is continuing. Briar has received funding from the Small Media Foundation, the Open Internet Tools Project, Access Now, the Open Technology Fund, the Prototype Fund, Internews, the NLnet Foundation, the Next Generation Internet programme, the ISC Project and eQualit.ie.
