Anatomy of a land grab: the law, likes, and legislator behind an Indigenous land invasion in Brazil

The polished leather of Francisco “Torrinho” Torres’ shoes gleamed as he walked toward the lectern in the plenary chamber of the Pará state legislature in the Brazilian Amazon. The 57-year-old rancher-turned-politician moved unhurriedly as he prepared to deliver a speech that would set in motion a series of events leading to new invasions of the […]

How much agricultural land is used by an average omnivore and an average vegan (based on average western data)? The table below shows the hectares of land used by one person. (data are obtained by Gemini.) An omnivore uses three times as much agricultural land as a vegan, mostly due to the extra grazing land. #Data #Gemini #land #vegan #plantbased #sustainability #farming #diet #food

Wind Turbines Provide Half of Rancher’s Income Since He Decided to Invite Them on His Land In 2006, the largest wind power project in Kansas was turned on among the Flint Hills. Today, the royalties it has generated for rancher Peter Ferrell are allowing him to pass the farm down to his children. The 50 turbines—which Ferrell barely notices these days—have provided half of his income since then, insulating him and […] The post Wind Turbines Provide Half of Rancher’s Income Since He Decided to Invite Them on His Land appeared first on Good News Network.

A healthier global diet could cut farm emissions by 85%

A global shift toward healthier diets could sharply reduce livestock farming, free up agricultural land, and cut emissions from land-use change by 85% by 2050. At the same time, fruit, vegetable, nut, and legume production could soar, creating a sweeping transformation of what the world grows and eats.

Although some bureaucratic hurdles remain, a lease sale brings #fracking to the #forest for the first time – the subject of political effort since at least 2016 [since #Trump’s first term] – far closer to fruition, giving specific #corporations legal rights to the #land & #minerals beneath it. #law #EnvironmentalLaw #FossilFuels #LandConservation #wildlife #ecosystems #FederalGovernment #Ohio #WayneNationalForest #NationalForest #oil #gas #ClimateChange
