Google reportedly cleared 250,000 TREES in Finland for a data centre without the environmental impact assessment required by law. Finnish authorities ordered Google to halt construction, but the damage has already been done. What was once a forest has been turned into a muddy field. Murky water flowing from the site into a nearby river has also raised concerns about potential harm to wildlife. #google #finland #datacentres #AI #suomi #forests #bigtech #timetoresist

Where is carbon stored in boreal #forests? It depends on the fungi https://jecologyblog.com/2026/10/20/where-is-carbon-stored-in-boreal-forests-it-depends-on-the-fungi/ paper: https://besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/1365-2745.70446 "fungal richness and composition were significant predictors of tree growth rates and soil carbon concentrations... specific ectomycorrhizal #fungi were linked with faster tree growth and lower soil carbon concentrations... organic nitrogen acquisition by fungi can stimulate tree growth at the expense of the oxidation (and potential loss) of soil carbon"

"The health of Indigenous lands and their ability to store vast quantities of carbon stem from the stewardship of the people who inhabit them." "Respondents from a wide range of countries, including Bolivia, Mexico, and the Philippines, mentioned using community monitoring or patrols to protect their land from outsiders and violations of traditional protocol." "New research […] also reveals a dangerous misconception that has taken hold in global climate discussions: the idea that Indigenous lands are so rich because they are remote or sparsely populated." #Forests need sustainable management and strengthening Indigenous rights and resources. “She realized that, you know, the people were also a very important part of the complex forest relationships,” Erica Gies says. “Which is much more of a reciprocity kind of mentality. If you take, you also give back. There is a responsibility to care for the system. Because if you don’t, and if you overexploit it, it would be really easy to starve, right?” Podcast: https://news.mongabay.com/podcast/2026/04/reciprocity-not-extraction-centering-an-indigenous-approach-to-forestry/ 🧵 #community #conservation #climate #indigenous

Timber-production forests are twice less likely to burn as timber plantations: "We find plantations in temperate regions were twice as likely to suffer stand-replacing wildfires than natural production forests, including in vital timber-producing nations like China and Russia. Plantations in tropical regions showed no clear effect". Bousfield et al. (2025). 'Opposing the privatisation of our native #forests is not an ideological one; it’s based on a history of the market failing nature even more appallingly than our governments have.' In other words: neoliberalism doesn't save forests or #climate, which are intertwined. https://thepoint.com.au/opinions/260806-who-the-greens-vote-with-matters-less-than-what-the-greens-vote-for #treePlantations #foresters #forestry #Australia #AusPol #climatePolicy

#Trump admin moves ahead to end #roadless rule on #NationalForests Environmentalists [warn] …lifting protections will have detrimental effects for old growth #forests, #wildlife & #water supplies. “Americans across the political spectrum have made it crystal clear that they don’t want political appointees removing protections from #PublicLands,” said Chris Krupp, an attorney with the group WildEarth Guardians. #law #SaveRoadless #conservation #ClimateChange
