A teaspoon of tan powder, warm water, a fork, thirty seconds of whisking — and it goes silky, the way bark must feel to the tree in a long rain.
Slippery elm (Ulmus rubra). The inner bark's mucilage, long chains of sugars like galactose and rhamnose, swells and coats a raw throat or a sour stomach. The FDA allows it in lozenges. Beyond that, the human evidence is thin and mostly traditional.
Take it two hours apart from any medicine, since it can slow absorption. Skip it in pregnancy. Buy cultivated bark.
It has no Gaelic name of its own. Leamhan is the Highland elm, its cousin across the water.
What do you reach for when your throat goes raw?

Devil's walking stick — Aralia spinosa — the thorny tree crowding every Southern fencerow, armed head to foot with spines that dare you close.
The young spring shoots, cooked all the way through, have fed these hills for generations. Kin to ginseng and sarsaparilla.

Seileach. Willow bark, and it is not folklore standing next to medicine — it is where the medicine came from. Salicin in the inner bark, converted by your gut into salicylic acid, which is aspirin's own chemistry with the factory left off
A teaspoon or two of dried cut bark, just-boiled water, lid on, fifteen minutes. Wet fence post with a bitter finish that arrives late #Herbalism #Herbs #WillowBark #Apothecary #Foraging #Gàidhlig #Druid #Folklore #Gardening #BloomScrolling #Nature #Cooking

And take the warning as seriously as the remedy: same family as aspirin, so if aspirin's off the table for you, so is this. Blood thinners, pregnancy, a child with a fever — no. Ask your pharmacist. She'd rather you asked than didn't.

Two handfuls of lemon balm, bruised between your palms until the room smells like lemon and cut grass.
Just-off-boil water, ten minutes, lid on. The lid is not a suggestion — the whole medicine is volatile and it will walk out through an open cup while you check your phone. In Gaelic the melissas fall under lus an eòin in some regions, though the naming wanders by glen.
Drink it warm in the late afternoon, when the day's adrenaline starts eating its own tail.
This is the plant for the nerve that keeps firing after the danger has passed — the one that has you rehearsing an argument at four in the morning with somebody who is asleep and doesn't know you're fighting.
What do you reach for when your body won't stand down?

Acmispon prostratus (Beach Lotus, Nutall's Acmispon) is a rare California native plant in the pea family (Fabaceae) that is threatened and endangered due to habitat lost to coastal development. Imagine my excitement when I unexpectedly found it growing in a coastal dune restoration area!

Non-native Centaurea melitensis (Tocalote or Maltese Star Thistle), an annual herb native to the Mediterranean region of Europe and Africa. Interestingly, this plant is considered rare on the Maltese islands. Photographed at the Manchester Preserve, Encinitas, California.

Saxifrage. The little rock-breaker — lus nan cluas in some of the old tongues, its name straight from the Latin for stone-breaker, because it roots in the cracks of granite and holds.
Tear the young leaves small into a bowl of warm broth. No boiling — that cooks the life right out of it. Cool water, torn leaves, a few minutes in the warm bowl. That bright green astringency is medicine for a throat the smoke and the crying roughed up.
Something that lives in stone, teaching the throat to hold. That's the season on the plate.

Solanum americanum (American Black, Common, Small Flowered or White Nightshade) is an herb in the nightshade family (Solanaceae) that can be annual or perennial. Photographed near Ramona in San Diego County, California in May 2022.
The two common names American Black Nightshade and White Nightshade might contradict each other. However, the "black" refers to the ripe fruit (a berry, unripe it is green), and the "white" refers to the flower itself.

Chasteberry. One teaspoon dried, covered pot, fifteen minutes simmering, ten more off the heat. Peppery, faintly bitter, more broth than tea.
The old remedy for hormonal weather — the cycle that arrives sideways, the perimenopausal months that feel like being renovated from the inside.

It works on the pituitary's schedule, not yours. Three cycles before you judge it. And if you're on HRT of any kind, tell your prescriber first — chasteberry has opinions about prolactin.

Fit 2 loads of laundry on the backyard clothesline; I am the ruler of linear space
-
Picked a tiny amount of chamomile flowers, less than for a cup of tea, but it's my first time successfully growing any
-
New neighbour texted for advice about making lavender oil, and I got to deliver a little care pack with the tail end of my last batch plus a zine about how to make her own 💜
I just discovered that herb scissors exist and they are literally life changing. Just chopped up a bunch of chives in like two minutes.

The little heart-notch clover at the wood's edge tastes like rain made edible.
Wood sorrel — seamsag in the old tongue. Pinch a few leaves in the damp shade and taste that clean, sour, lemon-bright snap. Scatter it raw over a salad or float it on cold soup just before serving. It's real vitamin C and a taste like nothing you can buy. One word of respect: it's sharp with oxalic acid, so keep it a bright accent, a handful, never a whole bowl.
