The once top-secret abandoned bomb facility hidden in an old slate mine. Step inside the subterranean labyrinth of Llanberis Bomb Store, Wales. In the 1930s the slate quarry became a vast RAF munitions store. In January 1942, the roof collapsed burying 14,000 tonnes of bombs (14% of Britain's stock). It took until the 1970s to fully clear the site of bombs. #Llanberis #WorldWar2 #Engineering #History #Explore #Underground #WW2

Sep 16, 1920: Jannetje Johanna Schaft was born on this date in Haarlem, Netherlands. A Dutch Resistance fighter who went by the nom de guerre “Hannie.” In 1938 she enrolled at the University of Amsterdam to pursue law with a goal of becoming a human rights lawyer. She became friends with fellow students Sonja Frenk and Philine Polak, who were Jews, and became increasingly concerned about the rise in antisemitism. (1/6) #WW2 #Resistance #antifa #Netherlands

After the German occupation of the Netherlands, Schaft became active opposing the Nazis and protecting Dutch Jews. She stole identity papers so Jews could avoid deportation; actions that brought her to the attention of the Council of the Resistance, who recruited her at age 20. She was asked to be a courier but Schaft refused - she wanted to kill Nazis. (2/6) #WW2 #Resistance #antifa #Netherlands

Shaft engaged in sabotage (including blowing up a power station), transported weapons, & conducted assassinations. She, along with sisters Truus & Freddie Oversteegen, became a 3 woman assassination team. Schaft killed German soldiers, Dutch Nazis, collaborators & traitors. She became fluent in German, allowing her to tempt German soldiers as a honeypot. She was wanted by the Nazis, but known only as ‘the girl with red hair’. (3/6) #WW2 #Resistance #antifa #Netherlands

Schaft was arrested at a Nazi checkpoint on March 25, 1945. Though she had dyed her hair to conceal her identity as the girl with red hair, her red roots gave away her identity. She was executed 3 weeks prior to the end of the war, on April 17, 1945. She was 24 years old. (4/6) #WW2 #Resistance #antifa #Netherlands

She is one of the most recognized women of the antifascist resistance during WW2. A film, Het Meisje met het Rode Haar, directed by Ben Verbong was released in 1981 and a musical with the same name premiered Oct 2015. The National Hannie Schaft Foundation Visitor Center is located in Haarlem. (5/6) #WW2 #Resistance #antifa #Netherlands

The aptly named Dödören has several Soviet machine gun nests. The Hanko peninsula and surrounding islands was in Soviet control by the beginning of the continuation war. #ww2

Today in Labor History August 4, 1942: U.S. and Mexico began the Bracero Program to provide cheap Mexican labor to replace U.S. workers who were being sent to fight in World War II, and to replace the 500,000 Mexican workers who were deported during the Great Depression in order to mollify xenophobic demands for “white jobs.” The Bracero program also gave farm-owners an alternative to hiring Anglo farm workers who hadn’t been drafted, many of whom were affiliated with the radical IWW. The Bracero program promised decent and sanitary housing and a minimum wage, but these were generally ignored by employers. Additionally, the workers were often subjected to racist attacks. The abuses contributed to the development of the Chicano Movement, the United Farm Workers and other forms of activism. #workingclass #LaborHistory #bracero #chicano #ufw #union #unitedfarmworkers #racism #xenophobia #ww2 #IWW #minimumwage

No, what I'm experiencing is closer to being a WW2 pilot. And the sad reality is just like WW2 pilots I've already put in more contact with the forces of fascism than anyone really expects a Black person to survive. https://dayssinceivebeenstoppedbythepolice.com #WWII #HumanRights #WW2 #BlackMastodon #ParentingWhileBlack #Police #ACAB

In the The Bridge on the River Kwai, the filmmakers had the POWs whistle the "Colonel Bogey March" because the actual lyrics British soldiers sang to the melody in WW2 were considered too offensive for 1957 cinema audiences: Hitler has only got one ball, Goering has two, but they are very small. Himmler has something similar, But poor old Goebbels Has no balls At all. #history #cinema #music #WW2
