Sooooo my recent mishaps with server administration are making me speed up my plans of shifting towards community-owned and -maintained hosting. Ever since my conversation with @boris@cosocial.ca almost one year ago, I took his quote “self-hosting is selfish” as a mantra. It’s time to act accordingly. Together with @Holly@pan.rent and @youjungnoh@pan.rent, we are putting together a group of tech-savy people who want to, respectively: Learn more about system administrationGet their hands dirty while doing soMaintain our own shared serverHost their own things (be them websites, projects, or services) together with comrades instead of individual infrastructure. There are many super cool collectives that are doing this already, and we intend to draw inspiration from their work and their documentation, but we really want to do this together! Who wants to join? Please, do reach out! I already spun up a small-ish VPS that is now hosting all my static websites. If you’d like to get involved, reach out and I would be happy to give you SSH access 🌻 We would also be very grateful if more experienced sysAds want to help us out by hosting workshops or brief classes. We intend to meet for the first time in South Holland (but maybe virtually too) sometime during the first two weeks of March. Next steps: Find a name for this group/server/missionPlan a series of (free, open) intro lessons with guestsStart hosting some thingsMigrate things I am already hosting with YunoHost in our community serverMigrate to a physical device in a home of ours? EDIT: I forgot to add this, but it goes without saying that ours would be a queer and transfeminist server #communityHosting #Linux #sysAd #systemAdministration #selfHosting #YunoHost #Nginx #hosting #server #VPS

#Today #3Things

  1. I managed to isolate a residential proxy botnet that was hammering one of my client servers, and after adding some new htaccess rules, I've got CPU and RAM use down from 95% to about 25% and no more 503 errors. #Tech #WordPress #VPS #Hosting #DDoS

  2. Monitoring my posture more carefully while at my desk working (and playing). My #interoception is a bit unreliable like many #neurodivergent folk, but a mindful body scan approach may help, if I can stay aware of it. My trouble is that I get so absorbed in what I'm doing, nothing else exists.

  3. View from one of my study windows this morning. More controlled and supervised burning in the southmost hectare, in preparation for cultivation. #Farming #FarmLife

Full disclosure on the cost of that free upgrade. The reboot to pick it up hung at the hypervisor level and took the instance with it. Almost 15 hours of downtime, 41.91% uptime for the day, and nothing I could do from inside the box because there was no inside to get to. Worth it. But this is the part of "simple restart" that the is mentioned in email. Also a decent argument for the thing I keep saying: the box is disposable, the data is not. #SelfHosting #VPS #OVH #Downtime #Homelab #Fediverse #Blog #Thoughts

Email from @OVHcloud@mastodon.social this morning: the bandwidth on my VPS went from 400 Mbit to 1 Gbit. Same plan, same price, nothing for me to do. This is the box running dol.social. The one I benchmarked last month, on the grounds that its memory and disk beat the newer 2027 model and the network gap did not matter enough to move. The network gap is now gone too. Correction while I am here: I said 500 Mbit in that thread. It was 400. The conclusion holds, my number did not. #SelfHosting #VPS #OVH #Mastodon #Homelab #Fediverse #Blog #Thoughts

Sometimes newer is not better. At least not for the things that matter to you. I benchmarked two OVH VPS in the same Zurich location. My current 2025 model with a 500 Mbit network against the newer 2027 model with 1 Gbit. Same AMD EPYC Genoa cores, same provider, nearly identical sysbench CPU scores. Then the surprises started. The older box pushes 6,612 MiB/s in memory tests, the newer one 932 MiB/s. That is 7x. Random 4K reads: 1.32 million IOPS against 832k. And the old model is even about 1 EUR cheaper. For a Mastodon instance, databases, and Docker workloads, memory and disk beat extra bandwidth every time. So the shiny new VPS gets demoted to reverse proxy and backup duty, and this instance stays exactly where it is. Benchmark before you migrate. #SelfHosting #Mastodon #Fediverse #VPS #OVH #Benchmarks #Homelab #Blog #MastoAdmin

Self-Hosting #Easypanel and #n8n on #Ubuntu #VPS This article provides an outline for self-hosting Easypanel and n8n on Ubuntu VPS. What is Easypanel? Easypanel is a modern, developer-friendly server control panel for hosting and deploying web applications on your own VPS or dedicated server. It provides a graphical interface similar to Plesk or cPanel, but with a focus on simplicity and modern development ... European institutions seem to be all in when it comes to introducing age verification mandates for citizens in member states: https://digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu/en/library/commission-sets-out-common-approach-eu-wide-age-verification-technologies I now have daily anxiety thinking about the future of the fediverse. So how do I channel this fear and turn it into something constructive? I'm going back to writing #selfhosting guides for newbies. It's a great distraction, which gives me a bit of hope. Especially the next guide, which will cover my favorite fediverse software - #GoToSocial (which is powering this instance) - and how to install and configure it. Your own little home on the fediverse! Lightweight and features-packed. Surely something like this would fall outside the scope of regulation. Right? Right? #MySoCalledSudoLife #YunoHost #VPS #AgeVerification #privacy #EUBigTech

Today I realized that my Linux Contabo VPS has a built-in script in /etc/cron.hourly that drops the cache every hour. I found it when I checked dmesg; there are so many "drop_caches: 1" lines.

I guess the memory is not dedicated, but shared via KVM memory ballooning.

It seems Contabo tries so hard to reclaim physical memory from its customers by dropping page caches every hour. I feel like Contabo is somewhat notorious for aggressive overprovisioning.

I will delete the free script.
