“I was passing a slow vehicle turning right when my car suddenly braked hard on a bend, skidding in gravel towards a deep culvert. A moment later it computed there had been no danger anyway and released control back to me. I’d been briefly overruled by a machine, and could have been killed. After stopping to deactivate the active cruise control, I, the human, was back in charge. The Australasian New Car Assessment Program (Ancap) has identified deficiencies with Adas, and in March announced new design protocols for driver-interface technology for the next three years.” My late model car when I counter-turn the steering wheel approaching a sharp bend with a solid white line hard then turns the wheel INTO the corner with a pole 🤪 Solid grip on the wheel, always. #AnCap / #Adas / #Aeb / #straya < https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2026/sep/16/smart-cars-autonomous-braking-which-driver-assistance-systems-actually-improve-safety&gt

@sister_ratched@toot.community we went to LBR* in the 70s, family hol, dad driving mum & we three kids, in our vw microbus. shocking wet weather, dirt/clay road there reduced to a super slippery slide. bus' tyres continually clogging with the super sticky yet slippery mud, so we kept sliding off the road. repeated outings of dad & kids to push push push while mum did the steering n pedals thing... rinse n repeat repeat repeat. oddly i have almost no recollections of LR itself, but the drive there is indelibly imprinted *ever after, dad never says "lightning ridge", but always "lightning bloody ridge" 😆 #straya

@Wyatt_H_Knott@mastodon.sdf.org 4 snakes I’ve crossed last summer riding. 🐍🐍🚲🐍🐍 The second last one I rode my bike over. The last one curled up and ready to strike before I had a group warn me. #PseudonajaTextilis / #EasternBrown / #straya /

prep for shower: remove towel from ensuite towel rack, shake vigorously, inspect floor walls & underarms for wee beasties, hang towel over shower door frame shower: do the doings post-shower [but still within the cubicle]: remove towel from shower door frame, shake vigorously, inspect floor walls & underarms for wee beasties, commence towelling... ...espy sudden appearance on shower floor tiles of just-landed big black, prolly-whitetail, spider... ...instantly engage adrenalin glands & deploy olympic-grade hop step jump & yelp... ...ponder just how fooken vigorous must the damn towel-shaking be, ffs?... ...mock once again all those doubters who pompously declared that no dropbear could ever possess the athleticism to compete in the olympic h-s-j-&-y event for... #straya 🤪

“Melbourne is a big city that somehow behaves like a village," said Anne Marie Lennon, general manager of the Crowne Plaza Carlton, who has worked across the UK, Ireland and Australia. "People here are genuinely curious about you. And then there's the culture, the food, the #music, the #fashion, the #art. Every suburb has its own vibe and identity." Na, it’s crap, weather is off. Don’t bother 🤣☺️ #Melbourne / #Straya / 🦘🇦🇺

sitting at my desk, wonder where suddenly crunching sounds come from... looking out the window and find three sulphur crested cockatoos each with a Riz cracker in hand having late lunch on my neighbour's balcony 🤪 #straya
