David Ellison Should Never Own a Combined Paramount-Warner Bros. Discovery, because of course he shouldn't.
No one person, family or company should own so much news, media and entertainment.
But that didn't stop David Ellison from trying to convince us he should (and oddly making it clear he should not).

Google profile suspension has led to major losses for air conditioner mechanic in WA
It seems they do have their own website, but it's the Google Reviews part that was sending customers their way.

If there are externalities can I compensate for them?
In my opinion, the #AntiAI crowd is actually doing the work for #Anthropic and I've wondered how much of the rhetoric is pushed by them.
Anthropic's business model is to make everyone afraid of #LLM #technology in order to regulate their #monopoly.
The biggest threat to humanity is that the technology is controlled by the top of the K-shaped economy.
So, real AI education is fighting the megacorps.

Now that I'm on the topic of food products. I recently came across two go-to products that just went through bullshit ingredient changes to increase profits due to corporate monopoly buy outs. Just more products I won't purchase anymore.
Cholula, which was bought out by McCormick & Company, took out the Vinegar and replaced it with synthetic Acetic Acid and "Natural Flavoring".
Annies, which was just bought by General Mills, just took out dried butter and nonfat milk from their mac n cheese and replaced it with cornstarch and "Natural Flavoring".
Seems like pretty much every product on the market has Natural Flavoring at this point - a perfect way to maximize profits and pass off shitty ingredients to the consumer without them noticing.

Hi @benpate@mastodon.social,
somehow I don't buy embracing a #monopoly goes well with neither 'fedi' nor 'diverse' an in #fediverse. But that's just my take.

With fascist techbros cornering the market on RAM and now hard drives, it seems like a good time for the geezers to come out and teach old time spreadsheets, record keeping, abacus use, slide rules, math by hand, landline telephones, letterpress, etc. etc.

Why the World’s Best Mathematicians Are Hoarding Chalk
At the core of #AndroidDeveloperVerification are a couple potentially useful ideas. #Google has entirely wrapped them in a pile of anti-competitive garbage designed to defend their massive #monopoly profit margins, but nonetheless, those specific technical ideas might still be useful. #iOS's "notarization" is basically the same. That leads me to ask the key question:
What would a #FOSS-respecting system of #verification look like? What #identity info is useful for trusting the #developer?
The New Republic | The Important Missing Word That
Discredits the Centrists’ New Letter by Michael Tomasky
AI generated summary, Read the full article for complete information.
In his piece, Michael Tomasky criticizes a recent letter from moderate Democrat Tom Suozzi and fourteen colleagues that lauds capitalism while conspicuously omitting the single word that undercuts their rhetoric—“monopoly.” He argues that monopoly, not democratic socialists or the government, is the chief threat to genuine competition and that centrist Democrats must confront it if they hope to unite with the increasingly left‑leaning base of the party. Citing rising economic inequality (the U.S. Gini now at 42), the surge of self‑identified democratic socialists, and poll data showing progressives now outnumber moderates, Tomasky urges the party to adopt clear policy commitments—higher taxes on the rich, a solvable Social Security, an $18‑minimum‑wage indexed to inflation, a permanent child‑tax credit, and robust antitrust action—so that Democrats can fight the billionaire “Epstein” class, restore competition, and avoid electoral defeat in 2028.

#USDoJ ruling reiterates: Google must sell #Chrome to a competitor.
Much better would be to mandate #FreeSoftware license, so it stays in community control and all the #UserHostile #monopoly crap can be freely stripped. But splitting the business is a good start.

#FollowTheMoney 🧵64/n The article made me think once again about Monopoly, and how perfectly it captures what the world is like. Originally called “the Landlord Game”, it was invented in 1903 by left-wing feminist Lizzie Magie who wanted to expose how rentier capitalism works through a game. She more than succeeded but - this being capitalist US - never got the credit for it. Interesting piece about it all here.

When big tech lobbies for regulation, it’s rarely about protecting users. It’s about cementing their own dominance by making compliance a barrier only they can afford. The moat gets deeper, the competition gets crushed. #regulation #bigtech #monopoly
Google has announced plans to invest up to $40 billion in Anthropic, the developer of Claude AI. The previous record was $13 billion from Microsoft into OpenAI. Amazon had already given Anthropic $4 billion. Three tech giants are now financially tied to the three leaders of the frontier AI race.
Independent players at this level have effectively disappeared. Computing power is controlled by the same cloud providers. Training data flows from platforms owned by the same corporations. Talent is recruited by whoever has the deepest pockets. This is not competition. This is structural monopoly.
Anthropic markets itself as a safety-first AI lab with Constitutional AI. The question remains: who writes the constitution? A private company now dependent on Google and Amazon. Corporate oversight of "safe AI" is not neutral academic process. It is the definition of allowable knowledge through the lens of business interests.
When you talk to Claude, ChatGPT, or Gemini, your conversations are stored on corporate servers. Official reason: improving models. Default setting: data collection. You can opt out if you find the buried setting. Most users never will.
The alternative is not utopian. Open models like Meta LLaMA 4 and Mistral AI can run locally on your own hardware. Ollama and LM Studio provide one-command installation. Local AI means no data collection. No corporate control. No surveillance.
Frontier models are more capable. But for most daily tasks, open models are sufficient. The question is not technical. It is structural. And the window for keeping AI as a public good rather than a corporate asset is closing.

This #PlayIntegrity stuff is really questionable. My banking app won't run on a #GoogleFree #LineageOS running #Android 16 with all the latest security updates. But a #GooglePlay device running Android 10 that was last updated in 2021 is approved. This is not a real #security check. This looks like a #gatekeeper #monopoly check.
