Oxfam has found that the richest 0.1% of the world’s population are heavily invested in disaster preparedness, recovery and reconstruction – a market that is projected to grow from $70bn to $92bn a year by 2029. This gives the planet’s wealthiest and most powerful people a “double dividend” from the climate crisis and an incentive to delay or disrupt action to solve the problem. #ClimateEmergency #Inequality

If you've not heard of Isabella Weber, you might want to read this profile, as she is looking like becoming the next political economist (my designation, not hers) to join the slowly growing group of analysts arguing we need to rethink the global economic settlement in various ways.... she joins Kate Raworth, Marianne Mazzacuto and others who are setting out a new approach to our global political economy. #economics #politics #inequality

Oh dear, the wealth advisors claiming that David Reuben (billionaire) had 'left' the UK due to Labour's tax changes, have been caught out... he's been domiciled in Monaco for tax purposes by his own admission for over a decade. And given other evidence of a lack of 'exodus' by the super-rich, it would be nice if the media started reporting real news not making up things that are convenient to their owners.... Not holding my breath, though #tax #politics #inequality

A favourite trope of the small-state crowd is to attack taxes by saying 'make work pay' as if taxes had prompted a low-wage economy. The *real* issue is the share of national Gross Value Added that accrues to capital & to labour (in aggregated terms). In 1975 workers' share of GVA was 71.9%.. fifty years later that has dropped to 59.7%. So, while the UK's economy has largely stagnated, capital has increased its capture of value from economic activity. #economics #inequality h/t Prem Sikka

Business groups are warning John Healey against raising the minimum wage too far; but we've heard such warnings so often & the disaster they proclaim doesn't come to pass Better if business leaders showed some *actual* leadership & limited top managers' pay too (or better, commit to a lower multiple between staff & managers' pay). There may be a point where the minimum wage does have the effects warned of, but right now its the manager who cried wolf! #workers #inequality #politics h/t FT

If you haven't seen politizane's 2013 video on #wealth #inequality in America, it's been updated for 2026, and is being followed up by three new videos, the last of which comes out on September 30. The first two new videos are out, on #income inequality. As a Georgist, allow me to point out that we already know the solution, because Henry George wrote all about it in "Progress and Poverty", all the way back in 1879. #USpol #VTpol

🧵 11/21 Most of my time in Stockholm was spent in the centre of the city, parts of which seemed very affluent. Nevertheless, I thought it important to get off the tourist trail and pay a visit to less well off Stockholm; after talking to some Swedes, I decided to go to Rinkeby. I was only there for a few hours during the day, so my judgements are based on superficial impressions. As I walked around, it was evident that Rinkeby is a different Sweden from that of the gated waterfront villas at the east of Djurgården. Yet I did not see the signs of urban blight that one might see in a depressed area of the USA : abandoned cars, potholes, endless graffiti, empty buildings, and so on . Lots of seventies low to medium rise apartment blocks, but nothing that appeared horribly substandard . Pretty? No. Prison like?No too! It's obvious that most of the inhabitants are of African or Middle Eastern heritage, but I did see some European Swedes there too. Oddly enough, Rinkeby was one of the very few places in Stockholm where I caught sight of an election poster for the far right Sweden Democrats. The budget friendly supermarket Lidl in its underground setting was depressing in the way that Walmart can be in the USA. I did buy a nice bar of hazelnut chocolate there though! I never felt in the least bit threatened or menaced in Rinkeby. I am a man though, and I was not there at night. Those two factors could well explain how safe I felt in this supposedly crime ridden district. I need to update my reading on inequalities of wealth and income in Sweden. #Stockholm #Rinkeby #Sweden #Inequality

Championed by #Vance:🚨The Trump admin is trying to incentivize women staying out of the workforce by subsidizing a married parent who stays-at-home🚨*take funds from a program that helps working parents afford child care, 80% of whom are single & mostly #women. Unmarried couples with a stay-at-home parent🚨don’t qualify under this draft. Only married ones do. The architect of the Proj 2025 version says no new law is needed, just a rule change. #Inequality #Misogyny #USPol

As the share of US national income flowing to employees continues to decline (stoking inequality), Abiel Reinhart (JPMorgan) observes: 'Regardless of what measure you look at, workers, in terms of employee compensation, have been receiving an increasingly small share of national income over time... And the flip side of that is: where is that income going? It’s got to go somewhere. And a good chunk of it is showing up in corporate profit margins'. #inequality #politics #USPol #workers h/t FT

989 people in the U.S., out of 340 million, are billionaires. 3,428 people, out of 8.3 billion, worldwide as of March 2026. That's roughly one in every 2.4 million humans. A tiny group of the human population and yet they do disproportionate damage to the planet and its people. We are destroying the Earth to create wealth for these men. It doesn't have to stay this way. We can change this. https://www.forbes.com/sites/pr/2026/03/10/forbes-40th-annual-worlds-billionaires-list-elon-musk-is-worlds-richest-person-ever-recorded/ #inequality #oligarchy #democracy

The Epstein billionaires, techbro ghouls, and White House kleptocrats could pay enough tax that we‘d eliminate hunger and support health care, housing, and education for everyone in the world, and they‘d never know the difference. The existence of poverty is a cruel choice that we can change. Vote in November for a better, more equal world. #inequality #kleptocracy #votefromabroad @renewedresistance@channel.org @democratsabroad@mastodon.social @Fobbsie@mastodon.social
