I just realized I can use NetBSD 11.1 to run Dire Wolf -- software TNC for APRS/AX.25. Also, chirp is available to program the Alinco DR-135T I have connected via a Digirig USB device.
I can now eliminate linux on yet another RPi3 device. Thank you #netbsd and #pkgsrc!
Will give it a test this (NetBSD) weekend 😊

A must read about «AI» hype by @emilymbender@dair-community.social and @timnitGebru@dair-community.social .

I found it particularly instructive to read the Leiden Declaration by mathematicians on «AI»:

I'd like to see a similar declaration on #hamradio and #AI. There's probably one already one out there, which I am not aware of.

hello fedi
if you are based on #karlsruhe and want to get on #hamradio but are too shy or don't know where to get started, i'd like to initiate a group learning for obtaining the licence
it's mostly for queer people but i don't have hard restrictions on who can come
Now thinking of trying a doublet I have laying around and orienting it vertically instead of an EFHW. Thinking this may have fewer unfortunate lobe issues. I will probably need to shorten it from 44ft down to 40ft though.

The Canadian Amateur magazine (ham radio) seldom makes me laugh, but Brent Dalgleish VE3GXD's "Backyard WSPR Tests with Everyday Metal Objects" was lovely. Using an extension ladder, eavestrough, a stepladder, a shovel and a beach chair as antennas, 3000+ km reception was possible

Random ham radio builder tip: old CB radios are a good source for "unobtanium" finals. Usually have a good 5 watt capable final stage for a DIY transmitter.... (and typically can be found for free or less than the cost of attempting to find a working 5watt capable final online) #electronics #hamradio
I've been watching the SSB/CW mods for the Quansheng HT with interest for a while and been sorely tempted. The most recent QRP Quarterly have an article by Bob Witte, K0NR on the UV-K5.
Now even more tempted but how dirty are these things on an specan? Anyone looked?

Hello everyone! I’m interested in radio astronomy, archaeoastronomy and SDR. I’m currently looking for hardware and software that work well with an older MacBook Pro.
I’m in QRX for logistical reasons, but I hope to return to active radio soon.

Bydlos of russian “Spy Numbers Station”,
known as M12, was active on 9319kHz at 19:40 UTC Sept 17 2026.
Received in WIMilan using a Cold War-era Plessey PR2250 receiver radio and MLA30+ outdoor antenna.
Can anyone from #AmateurRadio #HamRadio help me with this message

For several days, all of the VHF repeaters in my area have been experiencing very broad-banded and powerful interference. Much more destructive than the usual stuff most of the lids are capable of (yeah, people do that). Some were suggesting military, since the Navy's Air Weapons Testing Systems are here.
And yup, the main repeater manager locally has confirmed that the current Gray Flag exercise at Pt. Mugu is indeed the culprit, with VHF radars and jammers involved.

Hey #HamRadio peeps, who uses an EFHW or an end fed random wire for mutual-band HF in a vertical orientation? Or at least most of it vertical? Looking to hear opinions.
