Nearly 300,000 at risk from Himalayan floods, as flood zone building accelerates

Nearly 300,000 people may live in areas at risk of flooding in the Nepalese, Indian and Chinese areas of the Himalayas. The results, from a study published in Scientific Reports, also indicate that the total area covered by buildings within potential flood zones increased by approximately 45% between 2016 and 2023.

Vietnam mobilizes troops after heavy rains trigger flash floods and raise risks of landslides

HANOI, Vietnam (AP) — Heavy rains lashed much of central Vietnam on Friday and caused flooding in parts of the historic city of Hue, a day after floods and landslides hit the coastal port city of Danang. Almost 300,000 people now live in flood‑prone areas in the Nepalese Himalayas—new research

On Aug. 26, a rock and ice avalanche triggered a huge flood that swept through a steep valley in Nepal, leaving thousands dead and missing. It was an extreme example of a growing problem across the Himalayas. As glaciers melt, glacial lakes expand and mountain permafrost thaws, the risks from floods, landslides and other high-mountain hazards are increasing. At the same time, more people and infrastructure are moving into the valleys where these hazards are most likely to strike.

"Prime Minister Carney’s plan to sell more oil overseas won’t make life more affordable at home. Instead of tackling the climate crisis and investing in the solutions of the future that Canadians need, he is doubling down on costly fossil fuel infrastructure that will only make life harder for Canadians." https://ecojustice.ca/news/ecojustice-another-pipeline-proposal-at-the-expense-of-climate-and-nature/ #Canada #CDNPoli #ClimateCrisis #NoPipelines #BCPoli #ABPoli #ExtremeWeather #Heatwaves #Drought #Flooding

Another pipeline proposal at the expense of climate and nature

Proposing a new oil pipeline to British Columbia’s southern coast exposes a fundamental contradiction in the government’s environmental commitments.
