ICE’s DNA Collection Increases, SpaceX’s Rocket Crashes Into the Moon, and the AI Backlash Grows
In today’s episode of Uncanny Valley, we discuss how ICE has been collecting DNA samples of people with no criminal convictions, including children, which end up in an FBI database indefinitely.

Happy birthday Rosalind Franklin (1920 – 1958), #chemist & x-ray #crystallographer whose x-ray diffraction images were instrumental to discovering double-helix structure of #DNA, made important contributions to #carbon & #virus research, was 1 of the great scientists of the 20th century.
Watson’s bio lead some to (inaccurately) joke, “What did Watson and Crick discover?” “Rosalind Franklin’s notes.” While it’s important 🧵1/

I was talking with a doctor last week about my early fascination with #genetics (due to a documentary I saw decades ago about the search for the genetic basis of Huntington's). I said that if I had been scientifically minded, I would probably have pursued a career in genetics. The doctor said it could be argued that, by becoming a #genealogist, in a sense I did exactly that. Hadn't thought of it that way. I just ended up studying how genes are passed down rather than how they go wrong. #genealogy #geneadons #dna
Here’s a reminder about one of the most important results of the past fourteen years of ancient DNA research. Northern Europe was overrun by plague-spreading steppe nomads less than 5000 years ago, causing an almost complete population replacement.
It’s a 1492 event. Everybody knows that us Northern Europeans aren’t the original inhabitants of North America. But we aren’t even the original inhabitants of Northern Europe.

J. Craig Venter, who won the race to sequence the human genome, dies at 79.
"Venter, who served in the U.S. Navy during Vietnam, said the experience taught him how fragile life could be and made him curious about how the trillions of cells in the human body conspire to create and maintain life."
