So #Telstra was feeding all their network gear straight from Stratum 1 servers. If they had intermediary Stratum 2 servers in play with constraint facilities, the bad 2006-reset Stratum 1 server would have been ignored, saving the network from complete disaster. #mytake

"Runs since 1998. What an uptime. 28 years!" "Wow! But it's old. Runs FreeBSD 3.4. There are no patches for it. For decades. Switch it off." "Someone installed NTP on it." "Don't know. Can't be in use. Just switch it off." "Okay, let's see what happens" A day later in the news: "Australia came to a standstill when its biggest mobile network hit an outage. Trains, EFTPOS machines and emergency calls stopped working." #microfiction #Telstra

The absolute audacity of the #telstra CFO to get up and say they don’t know why a national outage impacting huge numbers of people, businesses and essential services has happened or when it is getting fixed but that it is probably only impacting thousands not tens of thousands of people around the country and that we can still trust Telstra. Imagine getting paid millions to be that useless

Oh.. Telstra fault looks like core network issue! It seems a heap of prefixes (blocks of Telstra network addresses) just got updated through different routes at 3am (i.e. the Internet suddenly realised they can't reach parts of Telstra so there was a mad scramble to find alternate routes!) So probably NOT BGP (this time!), but definitely a big issue on some core routing/signalling infrastructure! #telstra #outage #australia #internet
