Fascinating world of ancient #glass: A #Roman glass model of a #boat, dating 2nd c. AD. It was found in St. Aldegund in a 4th-century woman's grave. Six of such boats are known. We don't know their function: Were they used as women's urinals, as components of water clocks and sundials, as drinking cups? Further information on glass boats: https://web.archive.org/web/20221013071226/https://www.cmog.org/article/roman-glass-boats?s=09 or https://www.academia.edu/resource/work/23687699 📷 GDKE Rheinland-Pfalz #archaeology #RomanArchaeology

Scientists map 186,000 miles of Roman roads and find the empire's network was far less Rome-centred than the famous phrase implies https://www.zmescience.com/science/news-science/roman-roads-analysis/ A comprehensive mapping of the Roman road network across Europe, North Africa and the Middle East reveals a system considerably more decentralised than the phrase 'all roads lead to Rome' suggests - w #science #archaeology #roman

Blurred stars for NASA, first images from the Roman Space Telescope NASA — The main camera of the Nancy Grace Roman space telescope, the largest panoramic observatory ever built, has captured its first test image after being powered on for the first time. NASA announced it. The image shows blurred stars, ring-shaped and distributed across thousands of pixels, because the detectors are still in their launch position, away from optimal focus. According to the U.S. space agency, the result corresponds to expectations for this phase. The image will serve as a starting point to align the optical elements and adjust the focus, until each star appears as a sharp point. “After years of work building and testing the instrument on the ground, we now have confirmation that it’s working in space,” said Josh Schlieder, instrument program lead at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center. Roman Telescope Capabilities The telescope, equipped with a 300-megapixel infrared instrument, is designed to study dark energy, exoplanets and infrared astrophysics, potentially yielding results that could modify current physics models. Launched on August 30th from Florida, Roman is headed toward an orbit around the Lagrange point L2, approximately 1.5 million kilometers from Earth, which should be reached early in December. Thanks to a field of view at least one hundred times larger than Hubble’s, the telescope will study billions of galaxies. First Scientific Results in 2027 NASA anticipates publishing the first scientific images at the beginning of 2027. The agency has also calculated that Roman has enough fuel for at least 22 years of operation, more than double the initially planned duration, thanks to the precision of the launch and the probe’s weight being lower than estimates. #first #JoshSchlieder #Florida #Roman #Lagrange #Earth #Hubble

One of my favorite #Roman objects: World's oldest known "Swiss army knife", including a hinged knife, fork, spoon, spike, prick, sieve, spatula. Unfortunately, there is no provenance of this multi-tool, but it’s not a unique item: There are a few more examples, e.g. one was found in a Roman tomb in Albintimilium, Italy, dating 2nd/3rd century AD. 📷Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge #archaeology #romanarchaeology

RE: https://kolektiva.social/@MikeDunnAuthor/117015080657058746 31. Sie ließ ihn vor allem wegen seines Pamphlets von 1702 verhaften: „The Shortest-Way with the Dissenters. Or, Proposals for the Establishment of the Church.“ In dieser Schrift plädierte er auf satirische Weise für deren Ausrottung. #Satire #Schriftsteller #Bücher #Belletristik #Redefreiheit #Roman #Autor #Religion #Defoe #Zensur

Quoting

Today in History July 31, 1703: The authorities placed write Daniel Defoe in a pillory for the crime of seditious libel. They did it because he published a politically satirical pamphlet. Instead of stones, people pelted him with flowers. Defoe’s most famous book, “Robinson Crusoe,” (1719) has been translated more than any other book in history, other than the Bible. He also wrote “Moll Flanders,” and “A Journal of a Plague Year.” In 1702, William III died. His successor, Queen Anne, immediately went on the offensive against nonconformists. Defoe was a natural target because of his pamphlets and political writings. She arrested him principally for his 1702 pamphlet, “The Shortest-Way with the Dissenters. Or, Proposals for the Establishment of the Church.” In this tract, he argued, satirically, for their extermination. He also ruthlessly satirized both high church Tories and those Dissenters who hypocritically practiced "occasional conformity."

The Aeneid gave Augustus more than praise. It gave his rule a sacred genealogy and made empire appear to be Rome’s destined future. Yet Virgil’s world remains filled with failed settlements, environmental destruction, civil conflict, and people sacrificed to the promised new order. #Brewminate #Roman #Mythology #Literature #Virgil #Augustus
