🧐 Preliminary considerations:

  • it seems like there are an infinite number of possibilities already for participation in the #Reticulum network. It has to start with what one (person or group or) really needs and/or wants to do.

  • first one may just connect to the #reticulum network. no need for additional hardware. any computer, old phone (#postmarketOS), SBC, even antiquated, would do. one can connect to the network and experiment (through a TCP interface) to get familiarized with its concepts.

I/ ⚡ Flash and configure a #reticulum stack+software on a board:

  • the "rnode way" on ESP32 or nRF52: rnodeconf --autoinstall --fw-url https://github.com/attermann/microReticulum_Firmware/releases/ -> at least a dozen implementations/stacks available already, with their own ways of flashing...

  • to make transport node, the rnode/microreticulum way: nodeconf --tnc --freq 869475000 --bw 125000 --sf 7 --cr 5 --txp 19 /dev/ttyACM0 (sets Berlin consensual radio parameters and --tnc < transport node)

An #introduction since I now took the final step on moving to vildt.net - An effort of exploring self-hosting, digital commune and decentralized and federated web services that I have ignorantly started. If possible, any of my online (public) presence will come from here - I will tell you more about this soon <3 Based in Copenhagen, I daytime at Flashbulb Games and work mostly on on-premise and in-house solutions. I am deeply entranced in the tech work - doing my best not to get attached to shiny things, but at the moment obsessed with #LoRa, #SmallWeb, exploring new internet media, Giving and sharing is big part of my identity; I help at a local bike coop. Previously hosted Nordic Game Jam for a few years. Participate in local workshops and events in above mentioned. My remaining ambitions of 2026 involves: Making Zines on #Reticulum and #dumbphones Creating identity for vildt.net Searching for people who likes to explore above mentioned topics (please reach out!) 2026-10-22

👋 #fediverse #matrix #deltachat #meshcore #reticulum

Goddamn are there some hostile #mestastic folks out at the flea market...woooo you do not just send out a "hi" in that crowd. Heading up to Columbia next week. Should see some carnode action for #meshcore too. If you're in the lowcountry and watching me fumble around looking for y'all... That's ass. Hit me up. Let's talk mesh shit. #reticulum...mobile exploration is more difficult. If the ratio of meshcore to meshtastic seems to be about 1:20 users-ish so far, reticulum may be lower.

📚 there are docs and guides around (for the HW anything meshtastic-related should do as it's the same boards!)

  • should look deeper in bookmarks/notes, but already:

#Reticulum Community Wiki: https://reticulum.miraheze.org/wiki/Welcome

RNS recipe forum: https://rns.recipes/forum/ (also be accessible via the nomad network, but failed when i tried... ;) )

the full RNS doc for those who need exhaustivity: https://reticulum.network/manual/

  • there is also definitely a need for more doc/guides/etc..

#RTFM💗 (as in "consider reading the friendly manual"...)

A compelling article on the advantages of #Reticulum over #Meshtastic and #MeshCore: https://www.jonaharagon.com/posts/im-getting-into-mesh-networks-meshtastic-meshcore-and-reticulum/ Meshtastic and MeshCore make it relatively easy to set up local LoRa mesh networks, but in practice they remain largely tied to LoRa devices and messaging. Reticulum goes further: it can build a more resilient network by routing across different kinds of connections, including LoRa, Wi-Fi, Ethernet, microwave links and even the internet. Local networks can therefore interconnect while retaining alternative paths if one connection fails. Reticulum’s main disadvantage today is that standalone LoRa nodes generally need an attached computer running Reticulum. If #microReticulum can run directly on devices already used for Meshtastic and MeshCore, it could significantly accelerate Reticulum’s adoption. P.S. I found this article on Hacker News while searching for #MeshCore. The discussion there is also interesting: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=48299638 #Mesh #Decentralization

@everton137@social.vivaldi.net As much as I love #reticulum, its packets are a lot bigger than the ones from #meshcore (network transparency comes with a cost ;) ) it's a little sad, but atm you need to use the tool that fits your use-case (and #meshtastic has its use-cases too)

@fdlamotte@mamot.fr @everton137@social.vivaldi.net if you haven’t yet, you have to experience the feeling when you get voice/image over LoRa with #reticulum HAMs are not happy for clogging the air and the duty cycle policy is violated, but, hey… it’s fun 😄

@marsik@witter.cz @circfruit@fosstodon.org @everton137@social.vivaldi.net @fdlamotte@mamot.fr That’s something to think about. I’d like to ask: what about power consumption? Since we #reticulum fans want to minimize our dependence on hardware and third parties as much as possible, does Wi-Fi have terrible power consumption compared to LoRa? Even though Wi-Fi has a much higher data transfer rate than LoRa. I think there are already solar-powered Wi-Fi projects, but how energy-intensive are they compared to LoRa? It’s great that every device has Wi-Fi these days, so we can take advantage of it. How much power does a directional Wi-Fi antenna consume over a range of about 2 km compared to LoRa? Thank you.

Today I joined the Open Monday at xHain (@xHain_hackspace@chaos.social) Hack+Makespace. It was great to discover the space, and I really appreciate that they set aside a day to welcome everyone. I hope I can join one of their upcoming events about using LoRa radio devices to build mesh networks! I’m particularly curious to learn more about Reticulum. I’m still waiting for my devices to arrive so I can start experimenting with them. Ah, it's awesome that they accept dogs! #LoRa #MeshNetworks #Meshtastic #MeshCore #Reticulum #Berlin
