I read recently that in societies where empathy increases, justice decreases. It puzzled me at first, but it makes sense. Philanthropy is all about compassion and empathy – giving. But that doesn't make it fair. In fact, often it’s another way of making sure some are benefactors and can feel great about themselves, while others are poor and crushed and have to feel permanently grateful if they get anything at all. ⬇️ #MoralPsychology #AutisticThinking #Justice #Logic #Reasoning

Autistic people are famously fond of logic, and data. We’ve also repeatedly ‘failed’ in tests designed to evaluate our empathy. Tests which I found more interesting as a ‘spot the assumption’ exercise than serious research – or at least, serious research into what the studies professed to be about. I wrote a thread about it: https://mas.to/@KatyElphinstone/116070156336606549 ⬇️ #ActuallyAutistic #Neurodivergent #AutismResearch #Empathy #AutisticThinking #CriticalPsychology #Logic #Reasoning #Neurodiversity #DoubleEmpathy

A quotation from Doctor Who    THE DOCTOR: Adric, I give you a privileged insight into the mystery of time, yes?    ADRIC: Yes.    THE DOCTOR: Open your mind to adventures beyond imagining, yes?    ADRIC: Yes.    THE DOCTOR: And you criticize my logic?    ADRIC: No. No, I’m just saying that a lot of the time you don’t really make sense.    THE DOCTOR: Ah. Ah! Oh, you’ve noticed that, have you? Well, I mean, anyone can talk sense. As long as that’s understood, you and I are going to get on splendidly. Doctor Who (1963–1989) British science fiction television series, original run (BBC) 18X06 “The Keeper of Traken,” Part 1 (1981-01-31) [w. Johnny Byrne] More about this quote: wist.info/doctor-who-1963/8611… #quote #quotes #quotation #qotd #doctorwho #fourthdoctor #criticism #doctorwho #ingratitude #logic #makesense

The Australian National University's annual #Logic Summer School is running for its 34th time! https://comp.anu.edu.au/lss/ . Starting on 7 December, we'll have a week of lectures by locals, including a series by me titled 'Foundations (plural) of Mathematics', and then a week from our overseas guests Amal Ahmed, Natasha Dobrinen, Rod Downey, Rustan Leino, and Sara Negri. We have some funds we can use to support students to come to and stay in #Canberra , including international flights: see the 'grants' section of our homepage (menu accessed via top left corner in mobile), so please spread the news if you know students who might benefit.

X⇒Y is the same as "X is true only if Y is true" ... according to Tao Analysis I A.2. I still haven't settled this in my mind. It seems the wrong way around. Bur Tai says it takes some mental effort to see it. Is it obvious to you? How? #maths #logic

Browsing through the Linux kernelsection devicessub section blockfile badblocks.clevel critical When I look in sources for real work I use the old school method terminal (ba(c)(k)(z)(fi)sh)vimlogicpatience This is just a lazy exercise DESCRIPTION badblocks is used to search for bad blocks on a device (usually a disk partition). device is the special file corresponding to the device (e.g /dev/hdc1). last_block is the last block to be checked; if it is not specified, the last block on the device is used as a default. first_block is an optional parameter specifying the starting block number for the test, which allows the testing to start in the middle of the disk. If it is not specified the first block on the disk is used as a default. sources: man badblocks(8) https://explorar.dev/linux-kernel/ #kernel #sources #programming #logic #terminal #linux #explorar #dev #bash #csh #kzh #zsh #sh

#Introduction Hello everyone, I finally found a home for my profile outside of mastodon.social, after nearly two years of being on the network! #Mathstodon was the natural choice for me because I've always had a casual interest in #mathematics and lately I've been getting into (basic) formal #logic I worked as a #software #engineer for nearly two years, but after moving countries I found myself without a job for quite a while. During that time, I ended up learning a lot of things I don't think I would have had the energy for had I still been working. On many matters my opinion has changed substantially over the last year or so, and perhaps for the better, but on the whole I've gone from unearned confidence to general uncertainty, which I know some find irritating but I think it leads to interesting discussions. I'm excited to see what this instance has to offer and to hopefully make some meaningful contributions. — Bemmesr
