Catodon's official website is just one more reason why.catodon.rocks
It's been a couple of months since the previous blog post and a LOT has happened! We released 26.10.0 "Bongo Cat", and in a few days we're releasing 26.11.0 "Nyan Cat". The pace at which we've been working since @AntoineD@kwak.cab joined the team is incredible. In less than two months we have implemented:
-
Federated events, compatible with Mobilizon, Gancio, Friendica, Hubzilla etc, but also to the rest of the fediverse - and any user on the Fediverse can "attend" or "deny" going to a Catodon event, using DMs! Even if Mastodon and other platforms don't support this feature (yet, hopefully), their users can still interact with our events.
-
You can now "watch" posts and threads for replies - bringing back a much loved Misskey 12 (and Firefish) feature, but with some changes: First, it notifies only for replies. The old Misskey feature also sent notifications for things like reactions, which could flood your notifications easily. And second, you can now watch a whole thread, and get notifications for all replies, no matter how "deep" in the conversation they are! "Watch post" notifies only for direct replies.
-
Forum discovery: We created the Threadiverse Catalog, where you can browse through (currently) twenty-three thousand forums/communities, across eight Fediverse platforms that support ActivityPub groups. Anyone can use it, but Catodon users can call it directly through the in-app search. This way, they are no longer restricted by which forums their server has interacted with.
-
Added cross-posting in forums, a gap in the initial implementation.
-
Following whole Mobilizon and PeerTube servers. Relays now accept a Mobilizon or PeerTube server and follow its instance actor, so a small server can carry a whole video or events server without individual follows.
-
You can now block servers - another popular feature that upstream lacks.
-
A dedicated Videos view and timeline - watch and browse PeerTube, YouTube and Owncast videos from Catodon. Short form videos, including Loops, are under active development and will be merged before 26.11.0-rc.1.
-
Trending links in Explore.
-
Post languages, including automatic detection, both for incoming and outgoing posts. Timelines can also be filtered by language
-
You can now unfold a thread's previous posts in timelines, without having to open the post. You can also set how many levels of parent posts will be visible by default for replies.
-
OpenID Connect single sign-on.
-
Custom widgets: Admins can publish sandboxed HTML/CSS/JS widgets and a default widget layout, with consent before third-party content loads, live updates when a widget changes, and a safe_mode=no_widgets escape hatch.
-
Automated settings for admins, depending on whether their server is for a community, for a few friends or just for them.
-
A rewritten tutorial, to show Catodon's capabilities, and the "Your server" setup wizard, where users can choose between a full, a minimal or a custom setup for timelines and the navigation bar, during sign up or later. Since we are gradually introducing more features, we felt that a minimal setup option would help to not overwhelm new users.
-
Push notifications for Mastodon apps, and much wider Mastodon API support.
-
Support for the official ActivityPub C2S API! So now Catodon supports a third API, after Misskey and Mastodon.
-
A webhook overhaul. HMAC-signed deliveries, a 30-entry delivery log with "Send again", automatic disabling of dead receivers, a notification event for every notification, post filtering by visibility and origin, and system-webhook events for moderation actions and held sign-ups.
-
Alt names for emojis, which means you can now rename custom emoji without breaking past posts.
And these are honestly just some of the features we worked on. The changelog on our website shows well over 100 changes or additions just from Bongo Cat to Nyan Cat! But what matters just as much is that every feature reinforces the others - the whole experience is coherent and greater than the sum of its parts.
So that's more or less what's been happening with Catodon - we are going full throttle, we are creating our dream fediverse platform and see it shaping up day by day, and we want to focus on interoperability and supporting useful features from more Fediverse platforms - a lot of cool things are planned, we're not even half done!
Hopefully we have shown that we are serious about this until now - if not, the future will show it. We do not intend for this to be another Misskey fork that is abandoned after a couple of years. We're in it for the long run.
I'm realizing that this blog post was supposed to be about our just-launched website, why.catodon.rocks, and I have talked about anything except that. But to be honest I don't have much to say about it, I think it's very easy to use, looks like Catodon, and it speaks for itself. Antoine built it, go check it out, it's lovely.
Will try to write another blog post in the next couple of months - if I find the time, as we're literally working on this all day on most days! But we love it, and we think that it's worth it. The Fediverse is precious, and it deserves our best.
Meow until the next time!
Panos, for Catodon
