"far-right groups target non-political associations, sports clubs and community groups precisely because they are trusted and embedded in local life. If far-right groups can capture or intimidate the institutions that communities rely on, they may be able to reshape the boundaries of what is considered normal" #FarRight #PatriotPlatform #RNLI #UKPolitics Why far-right protesters target non-political groups like lifeboat volunteers

Why far-right protesters target non-political groups like lifeboat volunteers

It goes further than just briefly disrupting services.

“The RNLI [Royal National Lifeboat Institution]: people of courage and commitment to their neighbours, whoever they might be. This one’s personal” by Richard Murphy in The Politics Of Care on Substack @uk_politics@outonashout@mas.to@UKLabour@mastodon.cloud@ZackPolanski@mastodon.green@thegreenparty “I am now shocked, appalled, and upset that racist thugs in this country are targeting RNLI lifeboat stations, other installations, but most especially crew members and other volunteers because they put themselves at risk to save the lives of those refugees who are forced, as a result of hopelessly inappropriate UK government policy, to take to small boats to cross the English Channel to exercise their right, established in international law, with the support of this country, to claim asylum in their country of choice” https://richardjmurphy.substack.com/p/the-rnli-people-of-courage-and-commitment #Press #SocialMedia #Journalism #UK #RNLI #Refugees #Rescue #FarRight #Attacks #Lifeboat #Xenophobia #BBC #Neoliberalism #Solidarity

A lifeboat museum says it has been forced to close after its volunteers were targeted by anti-migrant protesters. Poole Old Lifeboat Museum said it made the decision after several incidents of "protesters verbally assaulting our volunteers". https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c62mq66lrqjo #RNLI #FarRight

I am gobsmacked that somehow it has become controversial to state that saving the lives of people in peril at sea is a good thing to do. But apparently it is. Anyway, if you think that saving lives at sea is a good thing to do, perhaps you'd like to show your support by donating a few quid to the RNLI? I'm sure they could use a bit of support right now. https://www.justgiving.com/charity/rnli?utm_source=CL&utm_medium=DT #RNLI #Lifeboats

"On X, over the past 24 hours, photographs of two [RNLI] volunteers have been circulated with calls for these two men to “face justice.” To be “prosecuted” under a Restore government. Wishes of serious harm to them and their families. These men have, apparently, now been identified by name, and their details are currently spreading like wildfire.." #FarRight #RNLI #Immigration #Terrorism The Far Right Has Put RNLI Volunteers In The Crosshairs

The Far Right Has Put RNLI Volunteers In The Crosshairs

Online misinformation about Channel rescues is no longer just poisonous rhetoric, it’s putting real people at risk.
