OK, I had planned to do this during the next digital independence day, but here we go: This is a new server that is open to all members of #UniverityHamburg. Be kind, nice and tolerant and don't abuse it. It is my server and I am making the rules 😉. Took the liberty to move my original account @spaetz@mas.to over to this instance. Let's go! My name is Sebastian "spaetz" Spaeth and I am #professor at the University of Hamburg. #UHH #UniversitätHamburg #DiD #AlternativeSocialMedia #introduction

If US professors were paid for their time, the #highered system would collapse immediately. The entire thing runs on unpaid labor. Shown: an Email informing us that we must take and pass this four-week course if we want to teach online, ever, even a little. The course is quite fussy, with lots of little checks to see if your modules in the LMS fit their criteria, the assignments are sufficient in number and named properly, the media files and links all meet specifications, and a dozen other aspects of the course meet the more or less arbitrary design rules based on someone's mistaken idea about best practices in 2003. To pass the course you have to build an online course in the approved LMS, with almost all elements required to be integrated in there. It takes roughly 60 hours, or so I've heard. This is all unpaid. You are just expected to do it. Previous online experience is irrelevant. Previous (generally superior) online course training is irrelevant. You have to do this course, which hasn't been updated in 15 years. Questions about where the criteria came from are met with vague and slightly threatening responses. You must get everything up to specific standards in the LMS to pass the course. However, they won't teach you how to use the shit-ass LMS the admins unilaterally dropped on us 2 years ago. That requires more unpaid training time. Not shown: admins sending bullying/guilt-tripping emails wondering why we don't teach more online courses, which they do about twice a year. #professor

“Swinburne University #Professor #AllisonKealy, an expert in #positioning, #navigation and #timing, told the ABC she had raised this exact scenario when she approached Telstra earlier this year while seeking support for a proposed critical #infrastructure #resilience #research centre. Professor Kealy said the pitch to #telcos and other critical infrastructure operators was that they needed to identify shared points of failure before an outage exposed them.” "We have been approaching all the critical infrastructure sectors to tell them, we have to act now," Priorities set by Business leaders and Politicians VS Academics and Engineers. #NTP / #GPS / #telecommunications / #Swinny / #SwinburneUniversity

"Building a shared world": that's what Luca Pattaroni have always been absorbed by. The research of the co-head of the Urban Sociology Laboratory asks what these models of coexistence and collective living might teach the rest of society. He has been studying alternative and countercultural communities at EPFL for almost two decades. Find out more about him, from the theory and practice of sociology to social justice: https://actu.epfl.ch/news/embracing-difference-is-the-foundation-of-a-shared/ #EPFL #UrbanSociology #Professor

I love my profession but… Sometimes I would like to have a remote control to mute my students and have minutes of silence. I would like to ask someone to create my weekly educational plan but I usually revise it because some activities are not meaningful or relevant to the children. I wish I had someone to clean up after a big project but I don’t. I’m the one who cleans and organizes. What would you love to take off your plate if you could? #Teachers #professor #introduction #loveit

My university system (SUNY) has mandated that all gen ed courses with quantitative or information literacy components include a bunch of stuff about #AI. The good news is that we are not mandated to cheerlead AI or teach people how to use it, but the latter is almost mandated by the language of what we have to address. We also have to have specific assignments about AI. My assignments will not leave students with a false sense that AI is benign or ethically OK. I expect some pushback, but this is one of the things I'm willing to get ugly about. Plenty of faculty have jumped on board the university/system administration's many other messages about teaching "ethical use" of #AI, integrating it into all classes to teach students how to use it "effectively" and "non-harmfully," etc. You can probably guess, from my tone, what I think of this and how many swear words my thoughts might contain. I'm not required to incorporate content about about other technologies like cryptocurrency, NFTs, crowdsourced knowledge bases, goFundMe, or (heaven forbid) open-source software. Nope, just AI. This feels like the corporate managers of #US #highered being as corporate as their sad little suit-wearing, jargon-spewing selves can possibly be. I really hope we come out of this someday understanding just how anti-labor, anti-environment, anti-peace, anti-freedom, and basically anti-human this top-down push for #genAI is. Fuck everything about this. #professor #fuckthis
