RE: https://mastodon.thi.ng/@toxi/117474817880134546 UPDATE2: There've been new developements: https://mastodon.thi.ng/@toxi/117486094261932225 🚨 Please read & act if you're running a small online shop in the EU or are even just a customer of one: These people need your urgent support. Otherwise the still new EU-wide packaging & waste regulation (PPWR) as it currently stands and is in full effect WILL kill most of the small businesses in the EU, incl. the livelihoods of artists, designers, illustrators, makers etc. who're trying to survive by selling physical goods online... The legislation already came online in August, but it's been an utter bureaucratic mess! Official communication and clarification was even worse/absent for many weeks since rollout. An exemption from the most damaging parts for nano/micro-businesses was only voted[1][2] on in parliament today (almost 60(!) days after introduction), but with positive outcome. However, this support by parliament is only a small win and we need more pressure on MEPs to clarify the severity of this situation for the next round(s) of negotiation with the EU Council and member states. To clarify: The most damaging & costly part of this regulation is the requirement for a legal representative in each EU country you want to ship to. The cost of a single representative is several hundred Euro per yer per country. If you're intending to sell to the entire EU, that's worst case 27 middlemen to pay, i.e. (tens of) thousands of Euro in just regulatory fees every single year. It's completely unrealistic, disproportional, nonsensical and against every aspect of the single market principles... It is now easier to sell to outside the EU than it is to sell inside the EU! Make it make sense! The only people this regulation benefits are major retailers and the growing compliance industry! Please boost for visibility! Thank you! 🙏 (Update: added link, punctuation) [1] https://packaging-journal.de/en/the-european-parliament-wants-to-simplify-the-epr-requirements-only-for-small-companies/ [2] https://www.rapporteur.com/news/meps-back-small-business-exemption-from-costly-waste-reduction-compliance/ #PPWR #EU #SME #SaveMicroEnterprises #Legislation #WriteToYourMEP

@NatureMC@mastodon.online Not quite helped enough! As this post[1] on IG explains more, this vote[2] only means negotiations with the council can commence, but there is no other practical outcome yet and several member states (incl. Austria, France, Germany, Spain) are actually against the exemption! This really is outrageous and we urgently need to put pressure on our MEPs in these countries. They're outright killing thousands of SMEs with this legislation! Albeit a different topic, the FightChatControl website has a tool to find & copy email addresses of all MEPs for your country. Use this to write a letter to your representatives explaining the situation and severity of not supporting an exemption for micro enterprises... https://fightchatcontrol.eu [1] https://www.instagram.com/eu.mea.hq/p/DeuOg7yjbW1/ [2] https://www.europarl.europa.eu/sedcms/votingList/A10-0266_Ter_Laak.pdf #PPWR #SME #SaveMicroEnterprises #EU #Legislation #WriteToYourMEP

Ireland = Big Tech’s bitch EU = ? “AI: EU Member States plan ‘digital expropriation’ of Europeans in the interest of AI companies In a leaked document, the Irish Presidency proposes to EU Member States that the interest of OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta and SpaceX to make profits should take precedence over the fundamental right to data protection. Use of personal data ‘in the context of AI’ should automatically be lawful. There seems to be wide informal agreement by many Member States. In particular, Big Tech would be able to use all personal data collected over the past decades with virtually no restrictions, as long as this happens ‘in the context’ of AI.” – @noybeu@mastodon.socialhttps://noyb.eu/en/ai-eu-member-states-plan-digital-expropriation-europeans-interest-ai-companies Hey, @EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu, you Big Tech’s bitch too? Question for other EU-based online shop owners: How are you going to deal with the upcoming EU PPWR packaging legislation changes[1] and specifically requiring a third party legal person/entity in every single EU member state you want to ship to after August 12, potentially having to contract & pay another EU-wide one-stop service or up to 26 middlemen just so are allowed to ship all EU countries? What happened to the idea of a single market? Some of the "cheaper" offers I found provide conformity declaration and authorized representatives for 1000 Euro per year, yet another cost-of-doing-business fee for ever increasing bureaucracy demands... The law has no exceptions/provisions for small indy shops/providers... Any links/insights/tips you can share?
