Absurd request: could I buy a physical audiobook for someone in the UK to rip for me? I'm trying to get the unabridged Stephen Briggs recording of Terry Pratchett's Monstrous Regiment in its UK edition - something that is no longer available digitally for sale except in its awful US edition that alters the meaning of the book. It's unsurprisingly difficult to buy a physical English language UK only audiobook that's >20 years old anywhere, but this one at least pops up in the UK once in a while, but I'm yet to ever see it on German sites or in second hand shops. Boosts OK #discworld #bookstodon

It would be nice to say that the tiny frogs thought long and hard about the new flower, about life in the old flower, about the need to explore, about the possibility that the world was bigger than a pool with petals around the edge. In fact, what they thought was: "._._.mipmip._._.mipmip._._.mipmip". Terry Pratchett, Wings #GNUTerryPratchett, #SpeakHisName, #Discworld

Alright, I'm having a clear-out in advance of moving house, and I have a bunch of books to give away to a good home; just pay shipping, or if you're in/near north #Manchester (England) we can arrange mutually convenient pickup.

Available for your amusement and delectation, details in the alt text:

  • A partial #Discworld collection (16 books);
  • A partial Iain M Banks collection (6 books);
  • Not pictured:
    • A heavily worn 3-volume Lord of the Rings;
    • Project Hail Mary and The Martian, by Andy Weir;
    • A pile of textbooks relating to computer science among other disciplines (I'll try to edit those in tonight).

Let me know if you're intrigued, and we can work something out. #bookstodon

A quotation from Terry Pratchett    What have I always believed?    That on the whole, and by and large, if a man lived properly, not according to what any priests said, but according to what seemed decent and honest inside, then it would, at the end, more or less, turn out all right. Terry Pratchett (1948–2015) English author Discworld No. 13, Small Gods [Fri’it] (1992) More about this quote: wist.info/pratchett-terry/4519… #quote #quotes #quotation #qotd #terrypratchett #pratchett #discworld #smallgods #goodbehavior #belief #conduct #conscience #doinggood #ethics #goodlife #integrity #karma #life #virtue

I really love reading. I used to read mostly #scifi and #fantasy, so you could often find me with my nose buried in #Discworld, #Tolkien, The #Witcher, or #HarryPotter back in school. These days, I also enjoy classic literature by "great authors". And yes, I'm now an expert in children's books because I read to my son every night before bed #kidsbooks. Sadly, I don't have much time for other reading these days. 3/5

There's a lot of wisdom and truth to be found in Sir Terry Pratchett's writing, and I think that this quote is so indicative of that, and so effective at getting the point across in the simplicity of what Granny Weatherwax is saying. It's also characteristic of how, even at his wittiest and most caustic, and even when he was writing his most grumpy and no-nonsense characters, he never succumbed to cynicism and misanthropy. There are a lot of things making the Discworld books special, and the amount of heart that can be found in those stories and characters is probably at the top part of that list. #GNUTerryPratchett #TerryPratchett #Discworld #books #Bookstodon #quote

@DJDarren@mendeddrum.org some #Discworld #PlaylistSuggestion songs: *It's A Kind Of Magic by Queen, dedicated to all the denizens of Unseen University Which Witch by Florence & The Machine, dedicated to Granny Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg and all the other witchesHole In My Shoe by Traffic, dedicated to Watch Commander Sam Vimes (and the rest of the Ankh-Morpork City Watch) because of Vimes's incredibly accurate boots theory of economics And I'm not sure I've been in your bed before, but if you'd like to see me there how about using the theme to the film "Ginger Snaps" by Mike Shields. Dedicated to Angua, because the film is about young female werewolves.

I am currently rather enjoying my first read-through of the Discworld series by Sir Terry Pratchett. As of today, I am a stone's throw away from finishing Interesting Times and starting Maskerade (probably later tonight). The quote below was the first quote that I deemed worthy of retaining for posterity, upon my first reading of The Colour of Magic. ---------------------------------- "His was the air of one who is unjustly put upon, who is dreaded and feared, yet who is the only friend of the poor and the best doctor for the mortally wounded.... Death, although exceptionally busy at all times, decided that He now had a hobby." From: "The Colour of Magic" by Sir Terry Pratchett (1983) ---------------------------------- #discworld #colourofmagic #terrypratchett #sirterrypratchett #bookquotes #quotes #literaryquotes #reading #books #bookstodon #GNUTerryPratchett #death #rincewind #wizards

@thepurpleoctopus@lgbtqia.space again, I am reminded of a moment in Small Gods (1992) by Terry Pratchett in which an engineer and a philosopher argue on which books to save from a vast library about to be destroyed by religious zealouts: Some books teach people how to live better while some books teach people how to *be* people. #discworld
