But tomorrow I messed up #CrossBorderRail 😭 😭 😭 Foolishly I thought there was a train every day from Valencia de Alcantara to Caceres, but it only goes 3x a week! So I need a bus, and the latest one of those goes at 10am The 6000 people town Valencia de Alcantara seems to have no other way to get in or out! 🤨

🚆 Tenco-Tecno Interrail 🔊 I have just started the Interrail that will bring me from Rotterdam to Paris, Sanremo for Premio Tenco, Napoli for Hallucinate – Unbox – Restart, and finally back to Rotterdam. I couldn’t find a funny name for this Interrail until now: “Tenco” is obvious, “Tecno” is because the Napoli Winter School is about tech. It’s silly but this is why I like it ihihih eheheh This thread will share things as they happen. Rotterdam Centraal → Bruxelles Midi I wanted to avoid Eurostar (more on it in the booking log). Therefore, I am splitting the trip between Rotterdam and Paris in two legs. I am on SNCB’s EuroCity 9228. It is crazy how people are encouraged to use Eurostar and spend a crazy amount of money for its awful service, just because other options do not appear unless you intentionally look for them. No sign of ECC 9228 on the NS app nor in the DB app. I was about to panic, but I saw it on the station’s board. I grew up on an island with three train lines. I grew further up on an island that didn’t have a rail connection to the continent til 1994, and that you have to check in as if it were a flight to go there. I now live in a country where there are only 4 trains a day in each direction that go further than the town on the other side of the border… and even the low speed train is advertised as going to Port Bou. The Cerbère stop is only really mentioned if you look very very closely. To me, being able to get on a train to Amsterdam just to get to Hannover, is now normal, but I forget how revolutionary that concept is to those who live in the less connected parts of Europe. When people on fedi talk about #CrossBorderRail, it’s in the context that this sort of thing should become normal all over the place. There are other issues for sure, the border town workers have completely different priorities. But it’s definitely part of it.
