Fun fact: during a flood mobile coverage can significantly drop as still water affects wireless signals and shortens the strength of signals. Also a tower that comes disconnected from the primary network can be ‘wilted’ aka powered down so devices look elsewhere for better connectivity. Lack of comms is leading some communities towards climate conspiracies that “weather bombs” triggered by bad actors are a cause rather than the clearly growing climate crisis. Telstar and Optus need to step up and invest properly. These failures aren’t happening in the same way in water / energy sectors. Outages due to poor practices are on the rise. Great discussion at today’s #auIGF forum. #DigitalJustice #TelecomOutage/ #TelecomEssentialservices

Day 1 of the AuIGF and already we’ve attended some excellent sessions on First Nations Digital Soverignty (and a call out that they want help to kick off a travelling roadshow to regional communities), A youth led session on the social media under 16 laws; that young people are terming “the delay” (the social media delay), and would prefer we calll it this too. And now we’re hearing out the significant local work on development of “A social contract for digital wellbeing” to help create a unified vision for communities/gov and orgs to sign on to and help curb the net just being increasingly corporate driven. Inspired today! More deets including details on the speakers and sessions on the auigf website. https://auigf.au/program-1 #auIGF #DigitalWellbeing #SocialMediaDelay
