Right, the F250 is basically a small semi in disguise, you can even put a fifth wheel in the bed to tow campers and whatnot. Problem is that a lot of people get these for “work”, but then literally never tow anything with it bigger than what a Ford Ranger can tow. #1 doesn’t explain the whole story, but yes, part of it is because American auto manufacturers, and NHTSA crash testing, focuses way too much on occupant safety. So does the IIHS to a lesser extent. Peak individualism. #2 is kinda true, but it’s like getting a jeep and literally never taking it off road except to jump a curb at your local Tim Hortons because the queue was too long. When I need a pickup truck… I rent a pickup truck. Wow! And save money the rest of the year and enjoy my sporty compact hatchback that is comfortable and is way cheaper on gas and safer for everyone around me.

Fair enough, you really aren’t spending much more, if any at all, on microcenter prebuilts if you’re lucky enough to have one close. There are tons of resources for learning, but if your time is worth more than the hundred bucks or so and you don’t care about customizing it to your needs, wants, or preferences, that’s totally understandable. But yeah, tough time to get/build a gaming pc. Imo there are a few different strategies to deal with the crazy prices. suck it up pay whatever it is to get what you want. get a good base platform and skimp on some components that can be easily upgraded later. get an old relatively dirt cheap system as a stopgap. Office pc + gpu? Gaming laptop with broken screen? But probably won’t have much resale value when/if prices do come down Personally if I didn’t already have a pc and old parts laying around I’d go with #2. Get a case I like, decent mobo, cpu, psu. And I’d get a used couple generation old gpu, and absolute minimum viable amount of ram and storage until prices come down. Or I get a raise lol Currently my desktop is a ryzen 7 1700 and Radeon 5700. It’s getting pretty old now, and if prices weren’t insane I’d have upgraded by now. But tbh, it’s fine. I don’t really care about playing the latest AAA games, and all the games I am interested in playing run absolutely fine at 1440p. So for the time being, it’s fine. I could upgrade the cpu pretty massively for not much money, but eh I’m really not bothered enough to do that until I get a new gpu. But a modest gpu upgrade is a ton of money, so not quite worth it to me yet. Edit: oh and yeah if you do just grab a prebuilt, you will probably want at least a 9060xt or 5060ti for the gpu if you want to play like brand new AAA games at 1440p and high-ish settings

I’ve been enjoying the writing of Zoe Baker recently. Specifically Means and Ends about the historical origins of anarchism. While looking for that, I also saw an essay on Anarchism and Democracy that references more recent thinkers. Might check that out too. Anyway, one of the takeaways for me was this: the fundamental opposition to parlamentary democracy entered the (european) anarchist canon in a time, when firstly parliaments were typically created as concessions by monarchs to stave off revolution, and by design ineffectual. And secondly violent revolution was still very much on the table. In this context participation in state democraticy was opposed categorily as a strategic error. If you live in a country where these two facts are no longer accurate (okay #1 is debatable, but #2 generally no), the strategic conclusions should also be different. Even if you have a post-state vision of democracy, some level of involvement in state democracy (or at least not torpedoing those efforts on principle) is non-optional in my opinion. Not least because fascists are trying to capture those systems to suppress all of our movements even harder.

Now keep in mind, the #2 type cases, people who will ultimately settle is from my personal observation something I probably personally under count in physical & virtual court watch. I really think, especially in family court the vast majority of families likely settle before needing courts. Settle at the first mention of court, or TRULY work together to minimize the court bill bc its just coming out of the overall family anyhow if you burn legal cash. #CourtWatch #FamilyLaw

@amadaluzia@mastodon.bsd.cafe It does, only if viewing a file (not a stream), and only temporarily, after pressing Ctrl-G. OH WAIT! less -m causes it to be persistent! HUZZAH! But it still doesn't work for streams. :/ OH WAIT #2! If you go the end of a stream and then back up, the percent gets populated! SICK!!! lol #RTFM TO THE MOOOOOONNNNNNNNNN!!!!!!!!!!

@mattsheffield@mastodon.social Simple voting rules:

  1. No Republicans.
  2. No incumbents unless the alternative is a Republican.

The reason for #2: If an incumbent has been around a long while and they talk about long-time problems that are still around, they have a vested interest in keeping the problem around and are part of the problem.

Yes, and #2 is very dangerous, it’s what MS+Apple did to FOSS operating systems, and what Google+Apple did to the web, and what Google+Facebook+Apple did to censorship in the web. You know, somehow Apple is in all those combinations, which is even more strange considering they are not the biggest contributor in each. #2 is why “social media” is what it is today and not a bunch of p2p applications similar to Limewire in style and culture. And when people say that p2p is inconvenient because of connectivity needs or storage needs, there are solutions, by measure of computer science not complex at all, and there’s no technical reason, it’s all politics. For devices with low connectivity supernodes and relays with good connectivity can be used (not even talking about that argument having become kinda obsolete again, look at that 5G everywhere). For storage one can use paid identity-addressed storage, there are many approaches, but for the sake of simplicity let’s just imagine that you still can pay to a hoster. For search by criteria with few index entries per object one can use something similar to BitTorrent trackers. For search by criteria with many index entries per object one can use something similar to Kademlia. There are solutions for all kinds of problems, it’s really hard to find a really truly unsolved problem for a networked application, provided you don’t want something fundamentally impossible.

Milk Diary is ready for the iPhone Duo! Also, shipped a big update that supports goals tracking with celebrations, hands-free logging, viewing entries on the Home Screen with Widgets, a completely redesigned Insights tab with clearer trends, milestones and more. Super excited for where the app is today vs. last year when I first launched. I’ve been using it every day the last 6 months with baby #2.

I’m actually pretty impressed with how cheap EV’s are becoming. The ioniq 3 at €28k is a great deal, and Smart just announced their tiny #2 ev at €20k.

I mean, they make poor-tasting coffee. That seems like it’s the worst thing of all. When you roast and then grind coffee, it releases carbon dioxide. If you seal it up after processing, it will usually inflate a bag; that’s why most coffee bags at the grocery store have that little one-way check valve in the bag itself. The only way to keep coffee from offgassing is to let it go stale first. That’s what they do to most coffee that used to come in metal cans. They have to do the same thing to the pods. At best, your coffee is pre-staled and only gets worse from there. Then you have all the stupid non-recyclable waste. A plastic pod that gets boiling water run through it, I’m sure that it’s leaching a fun mix of chemicals into your coffee. There is also a paper filter in there and a foil top. No way to recycle these things unless you separate all three parts and the plastic body weren’t made of unrecyclable frankenplastic (aka #7). Fuck those pods and any twat who is too lazy to make a damn cup of coffee without one. Get a cheap ceramic pourover and a box of #2 filters. Grind coffee, boil water. add grounds to filter, pour hot water. The only waste is a soft paper filter and some grounds, both of which can be easily composted if you like.

I don’t think voting for democrats and expecting real change is a good tactic. That would be a bad tactic, which is why I’m not espousing it. The tactic is thus: Primary status quo Democrats anywhere and everywhere we can with better candidates. Whether or not that succeeds, vote for the person running on the Democratic ticket. (Hopefully it’s a progressive.) If we don’t do #2, we’ll get fascists. If we don’t do #1, we’ll get status quo assholes, but at least they are preferable to fascists. No one has suggested a better alternative to me. I’d love to hear it, because #2 isn’t fun most of the time. It doesn’t give me or anyone else the warm fuzzies, but it’s important.

This is really more a case of possibility #2. Specifically, why are you rolling your own in the first place? The whole reason the output of the AI is “probably flawless”, is because this operation already has a million implementations. What’s the value in conjuring up another one and adding it to the code that needs to be maintained? Yeah, binary trees aren’t terribly complicated, but neither is struct Vector3 { float x, y, z; }; or any of its operations, until you realise you’ll be running those operations an awfully lot, so it would be better if it had the right alignment and SIMD instructions were used in its operations, and of course, if you have Vector3 you’ll probably also need a Matrix4x3 and a Quaternion etc., so in the end it’s just better to use an existing solution. This is what I mean with turning good devs into mediocre ones: the worst solution becomes the easiest solution, so that’s what people will lean towards. Of course, there can also be situations like you have a very specific use-case and using something off-the-shelf would be sub-optimal, or you’re working with old code and making their own was the decision the previous person or your dumbass past-self made, so that’s just what you have to work with. But the AI is going to struggle more with those cases too. Lastly, I also mentioned “energy”. If you’re trying to put in words things that aren’t easily conveyed in English (or any other natural language) all the time, you burn through your cognitive endurance like crazy. This is why you don’t want to be in a highly technical meeting in the morning, so being in one all day with a moron you can’t really come to common understanding with (beyond the size of its context window) is even worse.

@Junes@clubcyberia.co I played dwarf paladin all through classic, BC and WOTLK. Lots of tanking along the way. When I played Classic I went with what was my #2 class, mage, and it was nice to see how the other half lives. Plus everyone wants food and water which fulfills my paternal instinct to provide.
